High-waist jeans, also known as high-rise jeans, have a waistband that cinches the smallest part of your natural waist, just above your belly button.
High rise jeans are defined as having a fit at or above the belly button, and generally, the jeans rise measures 9–10 inches. Thus, high rise jeans are often called high waist jeans.
Are high-rise jeans supposed to cover the belly button? Yes, high rise jeans are meant to do exactly that, they should hit the waist or sometimes slightly lower.
The waistband of low-rise pants rests at the hip bones, mid-rise between the navel and hip, and high rise at the natural waistline (close to the belly button or directly on it).
Where should pants sit on the waist? Dress trousers should sit at least slightly above your waist, and higher if they are high-waisted. Casual trousers can sit lower if you like that style. The trousers should be comfortable, but still tight enough to keep a tucked-in shirt in place.

A high-rise trouser normally means one where the waistband sits on your natural waist (indicated in red). Your natural waist is the part of your body between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hip bones (indicated in blue).
Choose mid-rise or high-rise jeans for the most flattering cut. Mid-rise and high-rise jeans help to cover your belly. These jeans are the most flattering shape if you have concerns about your tummy.
If you have a short torso or you are average height or petite, super high rise may not work. Essentially, we want to be sure that you have a top, a middle and a bottom. If you keep moving your pants up too high, they'll feel like they are going too close to your bra.

High-Rise. This fit is often viewed as “retro” but the truth is, it's classic. Athletic body types with smaller waists will love this fit. Hourglass shapes on the slender side look fantastic in high rise jeans with stretch.
Mid-rise jeans also provide a little more comfort and leeway than high-rise jeans that might be a bit restrictive. Similarly, low-rise pull-on skinny jeans can also be restrictive and uncomfortable. It's as Goldilocks said, "this one is too small, this one is too big, but this one is just right."
High-rise denim brings some benefits—they help reduce the appearance of any bulging at the waistband because they sit higher on the torso than low-rise jeans.
Even though high-waisted pants are more forgiving than they used to be, they're not universally flattering by any means. They work with a variety of body types, and you don't have to be a supermodel to wear them, but it can be a tightrope act trying to find the right style.
The first area you need to evaluate is the waist. A good pair of jeans should never squeeze your soft, delicious center over your waistband. This is usually a pitfall of low-rise jeans. But a high rise pair shouldn't squeeze your body into a kangaroo pouch under your waistband either.
Wearing tight high-waisted leggings or jeans can potentially affect your whole digestive and pelvic health by: preventing you from breathing properly (using your belly) because the waistband restricts your diaphragm's ability to move.
If you have a shorter waist, high waisted jeans is not going to be a wise choice, or obvious reasons. Because they extend above your natural waist, they can make your already short torso look even shorter.
Go big on top, narrow on bottom. If you like the idea of belly camouflage but want to show some shape too, let opposites attract. Pair any full-cut top, blouse, jacket or tunic with a slim base of trim pants, leggings or straight or skinny jeans (here's where the latter come in handy even if you no longer love them).
How to measure waist circumference: Place a tape measure around your body at the top of your hip bone. This is usually at the level of your belly button.
