Any odor, and any visible smoke, is due to particles of incomplete combustion in the air. A modern cremator will generally include a reburner, which burns again the gasses going up the chimney. If there is anything discernable there, then something is not working properly.
Dark smoke usually appears when the temperatures drop suddenly in one or both of the crematorium's two heating chambers, which are fueled by natural gas. Dark smoke also can result from an overheated chamber. Crematories contain two burning chambers fueled by natural gas.
There is no odor emitted from ashes that have been properly cremated. Even over time, you shouldn't expect any particular smells to develop. If anything, certain cremation containers will simply emit a slight incense-like smell.

Once you burn off all the water, soft tissue, organs, skin, hair, cremation container/casket, etc., what you're left with is bone. When complete, the bones are allowed to cool to a temperature that they can be handled and are placed into a processing machine.

At some time in our lives we may need to have an operation to replace a joint or have a metal insert to assist the repair of a bone. Often we will die with these metal implants still in our body. We may then be cremated and these metal implants will remain in the ashes following the cremation.
