The Titanic's engineers died out of sight, fighting to keep the ship's lights, pumps, and communications alive until the very end, enabling the crew to help more than 700 passengers into the boats.

If you remember the movie you may recall a baker drinking from a flask and hanging from a rail during the sinking of the Titanic. That man was Charles Joughin, who was the head baker on board the Titanic and the famous survivor who got hammered on whiskey.
The SS Californian and her Captain Stanley Lord became notorious for their failure to respond to distress signals sent up by Titanic. It was alleged that officers on the nearby vessel observed the signals but ignored them.
