It turns out that Eleven and Mike weren't the only ones who forgot Will's birthday. Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer have since confessed that they forgot Will's special day was on March 22, and inadvertently set the roller rink date to be the same.
“Clearly, like the characters in the show, we also forgot about Will's birthday,” Matt Duffer said. “You know how George R.R. Martin has somebody — I mean, his story is more vast — and Stephen King has someone who just keeps track of this stuff?
But it turns out it's not that the characters forgot; the creators did. Speaking to Variety in an interview about the timeline of the overall season and several of the plot holes fans noticed, the Duffer Brothers admitted they had plumb forgotten about Will's birthday.
Based on one specific detail included in Stranger Things 4 episode 2, fans have deduced that that particular episode happens on March 22nd 1986. March 22nd is not some random date in the Stranger Things universe, it's actually a very important date: It's Will Byers' birthday.
The clues have been there regarding Will Byers throughout Season 4. For a school project, he picked Alan Turing as his hero. Turing was a math genius who was persecuted because of his sexuality.
Set in March 1986, eight months after the events of the third season, the fourth season is split between different plotlines. The first plotline takes place in Hawkins, where a series of mysterious teenage murders begin haunting the town.
In Stranger Things Season 4, especially Season 4 Part 2, Will Byers appears to be experiencing several emotional outbursts prompted by inner turmoil. Since Season 1, Will has always been deemed a more sensitive character, especially following his kidnapping into the Upside Down and his possession by the Mind Flayer.
In season four, a new aspect of Will emerged more fully; the teenager from Hawkins appeared to have a crush on his friend Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), and now Noah is confirming that Will is indeed gay and in love with Mike.
And in season 4, it became apparent to many that Will was struggling with a secret. Now actor Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, revealed to Variety that his character is indeed gay, and secretly has feelings for his best friend, Mike, who's in a relationship with Eleven.
They also insisted that the mishap wasn't personal. "Of course that would mean his mom forgot his birthday! It's too mean," Ross Duffer said. "It was obviously a mistake, and we're sorry.
Title cards made it clear that Will's birthday did fall during episode 1, but not even Joyce acknowledged it.
The events at the roller rink were originally said to take place on March 22, which is also Will Byers birthday as mentioned in season 2.
Angela, portrayed by Elodie Grace Orkin, is a recurring antagonist in the fourth season of Stranger Things. Angela was the 'queen bee' of Lenora Hills High School. She would frequently bully fellow student Jane "El" Hopper, ganging up on her with the help of her boyfriend Jake, and her close friends Stacy and Chad.
Mike Wheeler
After having to start a long-distance relationship with Eleven, Mike goes to visit his girlfriend in California for spring break.
How old are the Stranger Things cast and characters in season 4? Now, we're caught up to season 4, when Eleven is living with the Byers in California and is potentially 15 years old. Set in the spring of 1986, this is probably the season with the most changes to ages.
