While it's important to exercise your dog, it's equally important to make sure they get enough rest to allow them to recover and avoid injuries. This is particularly true after an active day where you've been on a long walk or cani-cross, for example. The occasional rest day can be greatly beneficial for your pup.
If your dog is new to fitness or not used to being active (deconditioned) then your dog may need one after every workout. For the dog who is generally active already, the recommendation is one active rest day a week.
It is a day to take things easy- a dog needs chill out time too! The aim of a rest day is to lower the production of Cortisol (the body's stress hormone) in the body to allow your dog to relax and switch off for a while. They can still have calm activities at home for the day but nothing that strenuous or high energy.
Having a rest day is often beneficial for the human-dog relationship as you tend to focus more on your time together, rather than completing the “chore” of a dog walk.
