A January 2023 survey of 2,200 Americans by the International Housewares Association for The New York Times revealed some startling statistics: One in five couples sleep, not just in separate beds, but in separate bedrooms, and of those couples who sleep apart, nearly two thirds do it every night.
It's normal for couples to sleep in separate beds from time to time, like when one of you is travelling, suffering a bout of illness, or has a habit of nodding off on the couch.
The co-sleeping effect seems to be strongest when a person is sleeping next to a partner whom they love or with whom they otherwise have a positive relationship. “We've found in our research that happily married women sleep better than those who are un-partnered or unhappily married,” says Dr. Troxel.
Not all of them go so far as to start sleeping separately. Only about 10 percent of married couples sleep in separate bedrooms. Around 25 percent of American couples sleep in separate beds according to a recent National Sleep Foundation.
According to the Sleep Foundation, 60 percent of American couples sleep together. You may be wondering about the other 40 percent— we'll talk about this a little later. Going to bed at the same time as your spouse can provide multiple physical and emotional health benefits.
“Normal” is whatever feels fulfilling for you and your partner, and communication plays a key role in making sure both parties feel fulfilled. That said, a 2017 study that appeared in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that the average adult currently enjoys sex 54 times a year, which equates to about once a week.
Once a week may be the average, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right amount of sex for all relationships. "I've worked with couples who would argue that once a week is too much, and others who would say it's not nearly enough," says Stefani Goerlich, a licensed master social worker and sex therapist.
Some common reasons couples sleep apart include snoring, restlessness, parasomnia, frequent trips to the bathroom, or incompatible sleep schedules.
The simple answer is that there is no age limit, because it depends on many factors. One's sex life is a very private and personal matter. For women, life expectancy has increased significantly in recent years and menopause now represents nearly a third of their lives.
When a couple stops sleeping together, a distance is created between the two that occurs naturally within the relationship. This may occur without either person realizing it at first, but it can grow and put a strain on the relationship and the bond between both partners.
You sleep back-to-back and far apart
Although sleeping with your back to your partner and a space in between you might not seem too romantic, one study found it's the most common of all couple sleeping positions, likely because it's practical.

Men Crave Emotional Intimacy
They want to feel comfortable enough with their partner to share their secrets, their fears, and how they really feel if they are wired this way. If they were encouraged to express themselves as a child, they would do this more easily as an adult.
Men love physical intimacy. Not just sex, even a non-sexual touch is something that can make them go crazy. Cuddling, hugging from behind, playing with their hair or touching their neck gives them a feeling of being loved. All these actions give them a sense of attachment, passion and care which every guy loves.

The pillow hugger sleeping position actually has many benefits, most of which are psychological. Pillow hugging has a similar effect on the body as hugging a significant other. It triggers the release of oxytocin in the brain, which in turn can relieve pain, boost your immune system and alleviate stress.
“When you fall asleep in close proximity to someone, being jostled or bumped can trigger a desire for sex that you act on, though you're asleep,” Mangan says. Some researchers cite drugs and alcohol as a cause of sexsomnia. Fatigue and stress also are considered likely causes.
Catathrenia means a person makes a strange sound when they breathe out during sleep. People who hear these sounds often describe them as drawn-out moans or groans. It can also seem like you're humming and can even sound sad or gloomy. For example, your breathing rate may slow, called bradypnea .
Holding hands while sleeping is common for couples with strong relationships. They hold their sweetheart's hand to show their partner that they will always be by their side. The relationship is so strong that their trust is unbreakable.
Although more research is needed, experts believe pleasant touch from a loved one may stimulate release of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is believed to promote social bonding and relieve anxiety. Gentle touch can also alleviate symptoms of stress and depression, which may be helpful if stress keeps you awake at night.
Men tend to love the hug from behind because it triggers their hero instinct, or their desire to care for and be needed by their partner. If there's a guy in your life who likes to hug from behind, lean into his protective arms to show that you appreciate him.
