At the end of the duty day, the drill instructor will enter the barracks, call out names and pass out mail. You're then usually granted about one hour of free time to read your mail.
No, the army & it's leadership - officers & NCOs have better things to do than read soldiers mail. Not to mention this is a federal offense.

Please, resist sending anything but letters. While you may be tempted to send additional items, your Recruit will thank you for not sending anything else. Unless you are specifically asked to send something to your recruit, don't do it.

Yes, it is possible to fail basic training. You could go through the trouble of leaving your home, job, family and friends and come back a failure. In fact, this happens to about 15% of recruits who join the military every year. Too many recruits I speak to think that it is impossible to fail basic training.
At MEPS, you will take the ASVAB, choose your MOS and take a physical. If you pass the ASVAB and physical, you will be able to swear into the military on that same day. When going to MEPS, it should take a couple of days to get through all the paperwork.
Basic training is tough on couples, but going into it with the right attitude will keep your relationship in a healthy spot from the start. Whether you feel ready or not, preparing your mindset in advance will help you get through this challenging yet exciting time.
Don't send pornography or 'pin-up' or nude photos, off-color or racist jokes or comics. These items can get your soldier, sailor, marine, airman or guardsman in serious trouble. Don't send packages of goodies. Basic is not the time for 'Care Packages”.

They don't hit or physically assault recruits, ever. They come close, but they never physically hurt or even touch recruits. Another thing that is important is that everything they do is for a purpose, a rehearsed, manufactured, and engineered purpose.
Weeks 8-10 will be the hardest part of training as recruits will have to give everything they have and more to keep pushing forward. At the end of phase three recruits will go through The Crucible, the final event of training that will test them on everything.
Once you have completed all of the testing requirements, have determined your career path and have taken the oath of enlistment, you are ready for basic training. You report for 10 week basic training, either directly or within a year.
Recruits drop out between 11-14% from Marine boot camp. Sometimes not being able to serve the U.S. Marines is outside your control (i.e. a chronic disease). In other cases, you can improve your odds of joining the Marines by preparing physically and mentally for boot camp.
Expect homesickness
Everyone at basic training is missing his or her loved ones. Keep reminding yourself basic training is only a couple months long. Bring a few wallet-sized pictures with you and a notebook. To ease the homesickness, write letters often and encourage letters in return.
After you arrive at boot camp, your fate still isn't sealed. Even though you're now on active duty, Army command can let you go without penalty during your first 180 days of service. The official term for this is entry-level separation.
How often do you get phone calls in boot camp? Service members who went through Basic Training said the Navy allowed 1-2 phone calls per month. Army recruits are allowed to call every 3 weeks when they phase up, and then every weekend once they complete Basic and begin AIT.
Enlisted Airmen have no visitation during Basic Military Training with the exception of graduation week. Basic trainees are allowed visitors on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of that week only. Families must plan graduation visits with care, as on-base access is subject to security restrictions.
At the discretion of the branch of service, new recruits who test positive on a drug screening are able to reapply. They may do so only after 90 days have passed since the last test. Applicants who fail a drug test twice are automatically and permanently disqualified from serving in any branch of the military.
