Stroke impacts the brain, and the brain controls our behavior and emotions. You or your loved one may experience feelings of irritability, forgetfulness, carelessness or confusion. Feelings of anger, anxiety or depression are also common.
Strokes can cause weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, and can result in problems with co-ordination and balance. Many people also experience extreme tiredness (fatigue) in the first few weeks after a stroke, and may also have difficulty sleeping, making them even more tired.
If you are limited in your abilities but are able to do some cleaning, the key is to work on small areas at a time and to take frequent breaks. Choose one multipurpose cleaning solution or use disposable wipes/mopheads. Cleaning supplies that need to be cleaned and reused can be difficult to manage.
Gains can happen quickly or over time.
The most rapid recovery usually occurs during the first three to four months after a stroke, but some survivors continue to recover well into the first and second year after their stroke.
A mild stroke can be an indicator that a more serious stroke is on its way. Compared to the general population, people who have suffered a mild stroke are five times more likely to have an ischemic stroke in the next two years. Patients who have experienced a mild stroke should follow up with their doctor regularly.
A stroke can cause permanent loss of function. The long-term effects of stroke depend on which part of the brain was damaged and by how much. Early treatment and rehabilitation after stroke can improve recovery and many people regain a lot of function.
Stress can cause the heart to work harder, increase blood pressure, and increase sugar and fat levels in the blood. These things, in turn, can increase the risk of clots forming and travelling to the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or stroke.

Puzzles and games – jigsaws, crosswords, sudoku, playing board games or computer games. Reading – books or newspapers or magazines. Needlecraft – books, newspapers or magazines (these may be available in different formats such as large print or audio). Sport and physical activity – watching or taking part.
Walking outside or on a treadmill, stationary cycling, recumbent cross training and many other forms of exercise that get your heart pumping are extremely beneficial for stroke recovery.
If your stroke was caused by bleeding in or around your brain (a haemorrhagic stroke), you must avoid alcohol for at least the first three weeks after your stroke. You should then ask your doctor when it would be safe to start drinking alcohol again.
It can be caused by a narrowed blood vessel, bleeding, or a clot that blocks blood flow.

Did I have a white stroke or a red stroke? Of people who survive a first white stroke, within 1 year 8% will have another one (1), and within 2 years 11% will have a second one (2). In one study, 39% of second strokes were fatal (2).
After six months, improvements are possible but will be much slower. Most stroke patients reach a relatively steady state at this point. For some, this means a full recovery. Others will have ongoing impairments, also called chronic stroke disease.
