American team owner Gene Haas had accepted sponsorship money from Mazepin's oligarch father, bathing both of his team's cars in the colors of the Russian flag and potash company Uralkali. Once it was evident the team could no longer take the Russian money, there was nothing to keep Mazepin in the seat.
