Thrombolytic therapy is a treatment that dissolves blood clots. At Tampa General Hospital, our cardiovascular specialists often use this technique in emergencies when the threat of a heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism is imminent.
Drinking plenty of water can help dissolve blood clots as it helps keep the blood thin and flowing smoothly. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day is recommended to help prevent blood clots from forming.
It takes about 3 to 6 months for a blood clot to go away. During this time, there are things you can do to relieve symptoms. Elevate your leg to reduce swelling. Talk to your doctor about using compression stockings.

In addition, when a clot in the deep veins is very extensive or does not dissolve, it can result in a chronic or long-lasting condition called post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), which causes chronic swelling and pain, discoloration of the affected arm or leg, skin ulcers, and other long-term complications.
The Importance of Exercise if You Have DVT
Aerobic activity -- things like walking, hiking, swimming, dancing, and jogging -- can also help your lungs work better after a pulmonary embolism. Studies show that exercise also can improve symptoms of DVT, including swelling, discomfort, and redness.
throbbing or cramping pain, swelling, redness and warmth in a leg or arm. sudden breathlessness, sharp chest pain (may be worse when you breathe in) and a cough or coughing up blood.
Try not to stay seated for more than 2 hours at a time -- get up and walk around regularly. If you had a DVT in one of your legs, don't cross your legs when you sit down. That position can affect your circulation. Be mindful of this when you're on long flights or driving for a long time.

Full blood thinning effect is achieved within 2–3 h. Therefore, there is no need for the initial injections with an additional blood thinner. After being stopped, warfarin takes 5–7 days to clear the body.
These drugs, called anticoagulants or blood thinners, can keep a DVT from getting bigger while your body breaks it down. They also can help keep another clot from forming. Some are given as shots, and some are pills. It usually takes about 3 months to treat a DVT.
Well, aspirin helps prevent blood clot formation, but it doesn't break up the blood clot. This means if DVT has already occurred, it won't dissolve a blood clot that's already there. However, there is some evidence that aspirin is helpful in preventing DVT.
Exercise does not speed up clot dissolution. You can immediately resume exercise once pain and swelling improve. Mild to moderate activity after a DVT in the leg will not increase your risk of dislodging the clot to the lungs.
Treatment includes medicines to ease pain and inflammation, break up clots and keep new clots from forming. Keeping the affected area raised and applying moist heat can also help.
Systemic thrombolysis uses thrombolytic drugs and medications that circulate throughout your body to dissolve clots and prevent future blockages. Penn physicians most often use systemic thrombolysis after an emergency such as a heart attack, pulmonary embolism or stroke.
People who are prescribed anticoagulants (also called blood thinners) to prevent blood clots from forming in the heart, lung, or legs are often informed about vitamin K. Because of its blood clotting action, vitamin K has the potential to counteract the effects of blood thinning medications.
There is no need to drink sports drinks, vitamin waters, or any other beverages with extra substances; plain water will do the task. If you are on a DVT prevention diet due to heart failure, however, you should talk to your doctor about the appropriate daily fluid intake.
Massage stimulates blood circulation, therefore can dislodge a clot, even if the point of massage is elsewhere on the body.
