About 2 people in 100 have a brain aneurysm. Some people are born with a weakness in an artery in their brain. In other people, health conditions cause the aneurysm, such as: high blood pressure.
Up to 6% of people living in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. While still rare, they do happen to up to 30,000 Americans each year. Brain aneurysms occur in both males and females and at any age, but brain aneurysms are most common in female adults between ages 40 and 60.
Risk factors for developing or having bleeding from an aneurysm also include high blood pressure, smoking, and excessive alcohol use. If you have any risk factors for developing an aneurysm, it's important discuss screening tests and treatment options with your healthcare provider.
They are most common in adults between the ages of 30 and 60 and are more common in women than in men. People with certain inherited disorders are also at higher risk. Sometimes cerebral aneurysms are the result of inherited risk factors, including: genetic connective tissue disorders that weaken artery walls.
Brain aneurysms are most prevalent in people ages 35 to 60, but can occur in children as well. Most aneurysms develop after the age of 40. Women, particularly those over the age of 55, have a higher risk of brain aneurysm rupture than men (about 1.5 times the risk).
About 25% of people who experience a brain aneurysm rupture die within 24 hours. Around 50% of people die within three months of the rupture due to complications. Of those who survive, about 66% experience permanent brain damage. Some people recover with little or no disability.

“A brain aneurysm is essentially the neurological equivalent to a sudden heart attack,” said Ricardo Hanel, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon and co-director of the Baptist Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center. “It can happen to anyone, even young and healthy people. High blood pressure is the leading cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Heavy lifting or straining can cause pressure to rise in the brain and may lead to an aneurysm rupture. Strong emotions, such as being upset or angry, can raise blood pressure and can subsequently cause aneurysms to rupture.
A brain aneurysm may cause symptoms such as headaches or double vision. Many times, they cause no symptoms at all. Because of this, doctors often are first alerted to a brain aneurysm through an imaging scan you might get for a completely different reason.
It's rare, but an aneurysm that is large or growing can push on nerves or tissue and cause migraine-like symptoms, including: Headaches. Pain above or behind the eyes. Numbness, usually in your face.
Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 50% of cases. Of those who survive, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Approximately 15% of people with a ruptured aneurysm die before reaching the hospital. Most of the deaths are due to rapid and massive brain injury from the initial bleeding.
Symptoms of a ruptured brain aneurysm usually begin with a sudden agonising headache. It's been likened to being hit on the head, resulting in a blinding pain unlike anything experienced before. Other symptoms of a ruptured brain aneurysm also tend to come on suddenly and may include: feeling or being sick.
The most common and deadly aneurysm is aortic. Two-thirds of aortic aneurysms are abdominal (AAA), and one-third is thoracic (occurring in the chest cavity). When the aneurysm occurs in both areas, it is called thoracoabdominal.
Bendok says 1 to 2 percent of the population have aneurysms and only a small percentage of that group will experience a rupture. People who have a family history of aneurysms, have polycystic kidney disease, connective tissue disease, and people who smoke are at increased risk of rupture and should consider screening.
Overall, 39 % of patients died within 10 postoperative years (mean 6.0 ± 2.8 years). Long-term survival of patients with a ruptured or symptomatic aneurysm was similar to that of patients undergoing elective aneurysm repair.
About 1.5 to 5 percent of the general population has or will develop a cerebral aneurysm. That's about 3 to 5 million people in the United States, but most don't show any symptoms.
Brain aneurysms can be diagnosed by several imaging tests, though an unruptured brain aneurysm also may be found while undergoing brain imaging — such as MRI or CT scan — or a medical evaluation for another reason, such as an evaluation for headaches or other neurological symptoms.
