Every year, for a month, the Chinese honour the memories of those who have deceased. The Hungry Ghost Festival is much rooted in Buddhist and Taoist culture and happens during the seventh month of the Lunar calendar and lasts for fourteen days.
Originating from the Taiwan and Chinese Buddhist and Taoist influences, The Ghost Month is said to start on the 1st day of the 7th lunar month and last a month-long.
The Chinese Ghost Festival will take place on August 12, 2022, which is the 15th lunar day. On August 27, 2022, the first lunar day of the eighth lunar month will occur. So, in the China time zone, the Ghost Month 2022 runs from July 29 to August 26.
It's also not advisable to go jungle trekking, hiking or camping, as spirits tend to roam in the jungle. You know, where there are trees everywhere. Avoid leaning on or walking near walls in the dark too, as spirits tend to favour walking or flying along walls and dark corners.
Happy colors
Avoid black, white and red for the time being—black because it is generally a ghost's favorite color, white because it is traditionally worn at funerals, and red because it is said to stir up strong emotions in spirits.
During the month, people avoid surgery, buying cars, swimming, moving house, marrying, whistling and going out or taking pictures after dark. It is also important that addresses are not revealed to the ghosts.
Don't wear too much red or black
These two colours are believed to attract ghosts. Therefore, wearing them during the Hungry Ghost Festival is an open invitation for them to follow you home!
Avoid long trips. People are also told to avoid traveling during August especially if it includes a visit to the beach. Evil spirits are said to lurk around bodies of water causing death by drowning. Avoid home or office renovation as well as moving address.
Don't cut your hair at night
This custom used to be more applicable in the past when electricity was absent. You can imagine that a haircut can be quite dangerous if done in the dark. To avoid ghosts from causing any accidents, haircuts are generally discouraged once night falls.
In addition to joss paper, joss sticks, and incense, you can offer up foods like uncooked rice, peanuts, candies, raw noodles, fruit, and even bags of salt and sugar for passing ghosts. Small cups of tea and rice wine are also appreciated.
