You should remain relatively inactive the first 72 hours following surgery. We do encourage walking around for a few minutes every two hours to maintain good circulation, but otherwise, no activity.
It usually takes at least 10 days for your penis to heal after circumcision. You'll probably be advised to take at least 1 week off work to recover.
Toddlers may resume normal quiet activities such as walking, climbing stairs and going outside with supervision. Keep your toddler away from rough play and put straddle toys out of sight for the first week, as they can cause oozing from the incision. You do not need to restrict the activities of babies and newborns.
Urine will not hurt the circumcision and should not cause pain since surgery was not performed on the area where the urine comes out. Urine is sterile and does not cause infections. It is not unusual to see a small amount of bleeding from the incision for the first day or two.
Healing may take up to 3 weeks. In most cases, the child will be released from the hospital on the day of the surgery. At home, children should avoid vigorous exercise while the wound heals. If bleeding occurs during the first 24 hours after surgery, use a clean cloth to apply pressure to the wound for 10 minutes.
Incision care
Wash the area daily with warm water and pat it dry. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing. You may cover the area with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and gauze bandage if it weeps or rubs against clothing. Change the bandage every day.
The introduction of a newly modified circumcision method has made it possible to improve the results of the procedure. This method is called the 8-figure non-absorbable suture (8FNS) technique.
Your child may be constipated after surgery, or they may not. If they have small, hard or painful poop, this is from the anesthesia and pain medications they received.
Drink plenty of water – about 6 to 8 glasses per day. If you are not having regular bowel movements, you may need to take a stool softener or a laxative. Speak to a pharmacist about which one to use. If you do not have a bowel movement in the 3 days after surgery, call your doctor.
Wear underwear that is comfortable for you. You may prefer a snug fit for support. Or you might like loose-fitting briefs. The underwear should hold the penis upright.
Newly circumcised men are counseled to abstain from sex for at least six weeks, as the unhealed wound provides a route for transmission of HIV; however, data from the three trials indicate that some men ignore this recommendation.
Adult men after the circumcision should bring a pair of tight fitting briefs to wear afterwards which will keep the surgical dressing in place. Continue to wear these at home until the swelling and soreness has eased.
It's best to avoid full-body bathing until the second day after surgery, but sponge baths are fine. After the second day, you can shower or bathe as normal, but don't scrub the incision site — just let the soapy warm water run over the incision and pat it dry.
This pain often gets better in 3 or 4 days. But it may last for up to 2 weeks. Even though your baby's penis will likely start to feel better after 3 or 4 days, it may look worse. The penis often starts to look like it's getting better after about 7 to 10 days.
Recovery and Outlook
Recovery from circumcision takes about eight to 10 days. While the penis heals, it may look swollen and red.
The Stitches
Although soluble (Vicryl Rapide) stitches have been used and will fall out between 3-4 weeks, they can be removed after 2 weeks. You should avoid getting the area wet for the first 3 days, you can then take a shower bath but do not bath for 3 weeks.
Morris' systematic review carried out in Australia [23] on early MC, with a total of 40,473 men, showed that medical circumcision (MC) does not adversely affect sexual function, sensitivity or pleasure.
You will want to avoid putting pressure on the circumcised penis in the first few days. 3) Most babies sleep quite well following the circumcision. The best sleeping position for your baby is on his side, supported by a blanket roll. 4) Healing is promoted by keeping the area clean and dry.
Pain is mild to moderate after circumcision in adults under general anesthesia with an intraoperative penile block. Severe pain is rare and mostly related to complications. Younger patients generally have more discomfort.
It takes approximately two to four weeks for the sutures to fully dissolve. Firm, supportive underwear while the stitches are in place is often helpful.
The tip may be sore, and the penis itself may look red and swollen. You may see a yellow crust on the tip as well. This is normal and should go away on its own in a few days. It will take a week to 10 days for your son's penis to heal completely.
Removing a layer of skin tissue — the foreskin — doesn't have any impact on other penile tissues or how big your penis appears when erect. However, it may have slightly less “bulk” when it's flaccid.
Pain control
Most boys will have some pain for 6 to 8 hours. Some may experience pain for up to several days after surgery.
The possible medical benefits of circumcision include: A lower risk of HIV. A slightly lower risk of other sexually transmitted diseases. A slightly lower risk of urinary tract infections and penile cancer.
Better orgasms
The penis becomes less sensitive after the removal of the foreskin. Because of this, men can last longer without ejaculating. This implies better orgasms for both partners. Thus, the lower sensitivity of the penis after circumcision ensures better and longer sexual activity.
