There is more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone on the planet. Yet as many as 828 million people still go hungry.
1 in 9 people go to bed hungry each night
That's 795 million people on the planet who suffer from chronic hunger, according to the United Nations World Food Program The U.N.
World hunger facts and figures for 2022
That 828 million isn't the largest figure for world hunger: The FAO estimates that there are 2.3 billion people facing less extreme, but still dangerous, levels of food insecurity. That's roughly 29% of the global population.
According to the USDA, more than 34 million people, including 9 million children, in the United States are food insecure.
Up to 811 million people — about 10% of the world's population — regularly go to bed hungry.
It was most common for respondents to have four or more eating occasions on an average day (89.6 percent of NHANES respondents), followed by three eating occasions per day (8.5 percent of respondents), and then two eating occasions per day (1.7 percent of respondents).
While there's no hard-and-fast rule on how often you should feel hungry, "it's fair to say every three to four hours," says Lisa Young, Ph. D., NYC-based nutritionist and adjunct professor of nutrition at NYU.
People of normal weight may be able to extend their life span by restricting calories, according to a new study that attempted to measure the pace of aging in people asked to cut their calorie intake by 25% over two years.
Agostino "Angus" Giuseppe A Barbieri (1939 – 7 September 1990) was a Scottish man who fasted for 392 days, from June 1965 to July 1966. He lived on tea, coffee, sparkling water, and vitamins while living at home in Tayport, Scotland, and frequently visiting Maryfield Hospital for medical evaluation.

Undereating can also lead to an imbalanced diet. This can mean that a person's body does not receive enough of specific nutrients to maintain a healthy immune system and fight off illnesses. It can also mean that illnesses, such as the common cold, last longer than they should.
“Some people also tend to think that if they skip breakfast and lunch, they will be able to indulge more at holiday dinners without exceeding their calorie limit for the day.” But forgoing food isn't healthy, and it can actually lead to weight gain.
But do we need three meals to be healthy? The short answer is no. Our metabolism won't shut up shop if we don't eat as soon as we wake up, it is not the most important meal of the day and there is no inherent biological need to have three meals a day (or the recent trend of six smaller ones).
An average woman needs 2,000 calories every day if she rests and eats nothing (6). So, if you do not eat anything for 2 days, you will technically already have a 4,000 calorie deficit. That means you have just smidgen over one pound without eating anything for 48 hours.
Water fasting will likely result in lean muscle wasting, or muscle mass loss that occurs when you don't take in protein, she says. To compensate, your body starts to break down muscles. You might develop other nutrient deficiencies as well.
“On a day you don't eat for 24 hours, you're guaranteed to be losing a third or half a pound of non-water weight that's mostly from body fat,” Pilon told Global News.
The researchers found that people who cut their calories slowed the pace of their aging by 2% to 3%, compared to people who were on a normal diet. That translates, Belsky said, to a 10% to 15% reduction in the likelihood of dying early. "We all have the power to change the trajectories of aging," he said.
“As we age we generally are less active,” says Dr. Hodges. “On average people over the age of 60, and certainly older than 70, have a lower need for energy than when they were younger because they expend less energy, with energy being calories. Generally speaking, their caloric needs are lower because they do less.”
But the practice has clear upsides. A 2019 study followed 2,001 heart patients and found those who routinely fasted were much more likely to be alive four years after a common procedure, cardiac catheterisation, compared with patients who never fasted, did it briefly, or stopped many years earlier.
Being hungry is good for the gut
It varies between people, but between 24 and 48 hours is perfectly normal. If you eat therefore every couple of hours all day long, with the only break being for a few hours overnight, you gut is in a constant state of digestion.
Your body relies on food for energy, so it's normal to feel hungry if you don't eat for a few hours. But if your stomach has a constant rumble, even after a meal, something could be going on with your health. The medical term for extreme hunger is polyphagia. If you feel hungry all the time, see your doctor.
Reduce unnecessary snacking. On a low-carb diet you should aim to eat when hungry, until you are satisfied… but just as important if you want to become lean: Don't eat if you're not hungry. Needless snacking will stall your weight loss. This can be a problem on low-carb too.
