Approximately 500 students will get a 99 ATAR in states like Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Approximately 100 students score a 99 every year in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, while approximately 40 students achieve this in the ACT.
The elusive 99.95 ATAR is something a lot of people strive for but few achieve. No matter what your goals are, it helps to learn from someone who's achieved a top ATAR before, if only to learn some useful tips and tricks from them.
As the ATAR is a percentile, a 99.95 ATAR means that you are in the top 0.05% of your state. Likewise, an ATAR of 99 means that you are in the top 1% of your state. Generally an ATAR of 99+ is considered as competitive for entry into Medicine (dependent on performances in the UCAT and Interviews).

54,894 students were eligible for an ATAR. This is 137 fewer than in 2019. 48 students received the top ATAR of 99.95. Of these students, 15 were female and 33 were male; they came from a mix of government and non-government schools and studied a wide range of courses.

An ATAR of 100 is impossible
Because the ATAR is a rank (not a percentage or mark) and it's measured in increments of 0.05 the highest ATAR you could get is 99.95.
For most people, a good ATAR score is 80.00.
With a score of 80.00, you're in a strong position and have plenty of options.
VCE students receive their ATAR results
Teia and Gemima Herft were among 50,000 Victorian students who woke up at 7am to learn about their well deserved scores. "It feels like Christmas morning, it's very exciting," Teia said. After 13 long years of schooling, 39 students achieved the highest possible rank of 99.95.
Like an OP1, getting a 99 ATAR or even that elusive 99.95 ATAR isn't impossible. It's a process that involves a lot of passion for learning and commitment to constant improvement.
Re: What does it take to get an ATAR of approximately 99.95? Studying for more than 5hr-8hr is required to memorise really well and achieve outstanding results.
For instance, to be on target for an ATAR of 99+, you only need to be average in 4U Maths, whereas you would need to be in the top 3% of 2U Maths. The last proviso “that you are a capable of” is very important. There is no point doing a high scaling Maths course if you cannot do it.
One Flinders student, Laura Webb, achieved the highest possible ATAR of 99.95.
Finally, the scaled scores are added together (as described below) to generate an aggregate, which is judged against the aggregates of all other students in the state on a bell curve, producing the ATAR ranking.
17.7% of the students received an ATAR of 90.00 or above, 35.2% received an ATAR of at least 80.00, 52.1% at least 70.00, and 67.8% at least 60.00. The median ATAR was 71.25, slightly higher than in 2021. The median ATAR for females was 72.45 whereas the median ATAR for males was 69.85.
In general, maths and science subjects are scaled up and arts subjects are scaled down. English and business subjects will usually remain the same. There is a misconception that this scaling is based on how difficult the subject is but, in general, subjects are designed to offer the same level of challenge.
Chemistry: This is the highest-scaling science subject. It is also a prerequisite for some courses in particular medicine and so a lot of high-achieving students tend to take it. This means that it can be slightly more difficult to get a high raw score which is the reason Chemistry scales pretty highly.
The first reason is that it brings NSW in line with other states and territories, which were all providing a maximum rank of 99.95 under different names by the time the ATAR was introduced in NSW in 2009.
With nine students achieving the highest possible ATAR of 99.95 (the highest number in Wesley College history), a median ATAR of 86.85 (combined VCE and IB DP) and 43.5% of students achieving an ATAR of ≥ 90 (placing them in the top 10% in Australia), the Class of 2021 took adversity in their stride.
