Give your dog one 3 oz can per 3 - 3½ pounds of body weight daily, divided into two or more meals. Adjust this amount as needed to help maintain your dog's ideal body condition.
AMOUNT TO FEED
A 10kg dog requires approximately 200g per day, or 1.4kg over a week.
We understand every dog is different. We recommend that in general your dog should consume around 2% to 3% of its body weight per day. Therefore a dog weighing 5kg should be eating approximately 100g of food per day.
Feeding Guide: Adult Dogs
The starting point for calculating feeding amounts: Adult : 10g per 1kg of body weight per day. Senior : 8g per 1kg of body weight per day.
A healthy puppy should be fed on average 5-8% of their body weight per day – this will decrease as they get older, which you see on our lovely table below. FOR EXAMPLE: A 10kg puppy would require 500 – 800g grams of puppy food per day.
Here is the most common definition: Small breed dog: less than 22lb (10kg) Medium breed dog: 22lb - 55lb (10-25kg) Large breed dog: over 55lb (25kg)
Small dogs, characteristics
Small dogs are defined as male and female specimens of all those breeds that do not exceed 10 kg in weight once they reach adulthood. There is a distinction in this category that divides small dogs into mini, that is from 5 to 10 kg and toy, up to 4 kg.
Wet entrees are also less processed than kibble but much less expensive than raw diets. Contrary to the myths around wet entrees, dogs can enjoy them every day without worry of upsetting your pet's gastrointestinal system, especially if you stick to high-quality brands.
The higher moisture, protein, and fat content in wet food can sometimes cause upset tummies, especially while transitioning off kibble. Some pet advocates argue that a canned dog food diet too high in protein can overtax the kidneys and liver, and they prefer a more balanced diet.
Benefits of wet dog food
All of our canned dog food is nutritionally complete and balanced for either maintenance of adult dogs or growth of puppies. Whether you feed your dog wet dog food every day or just as an occasional treat, you know your dog is getting all the nutrients he needs.
You can choose your own ratio of dry to wet food, but we generally recommend two thirds dry kibble to one third wet food.
Generally speaking, wet food is better for dogs than dry food. Wet food has fewer carbohydrates, which are difficult for dogs to digest, and more water, which keeps dogs hydrated. As we've said time and again when discussing training techniques, breed standards and best dog parent practices, every pup is an individual.
This is why mixing wet and dry food can be so beneficial. It's the best of both worlds. Combining the two will bring balance to your dog's diet, offering up a complete and more rounded mealtime that covers a wider range of nutrients. More variety, different textures, contrasting flavours.
If you can see or feel the ribs and they don't seem to have any fat on them your dog is probably underfed. If your dog is losing patches of hair there may be an issue with the nutrition. Go talk to your veterinarian to determine if your pet is having issues with their nutrition.
The vast majority of dogs, however, will stop eating once they've had enough. They might eat to the point of nausea, or until they throw up, but rarely, if ever, until they die. Dogs, cats, horses, and goats have all been known to eat themselves to death.
For at-home calculating, you can use the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula. Take your dog's weight in kilograms, multiply by 30, and add 70 (or, take their weight in pounds, divide by 2.2, multiply this figure by 30 and add 70).
Wet dog food contains about 70% to 85% water which is then mixed with other dry ingredients. Because of the high water content, your dog will want to pee more often hence if you are house breaking your dog it would be a good idea to get wee wee pads.
Keep in mind that wet dog food contains moisture. Dogs who are on a wet food diet may drink less water than dogs on just a dry food diet. Every dog owner should know how to check for dehydration. Check your dog's gums; if they feel dry or sticky, it means your pet does not have enough water.
Wet food tends to be lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein and fat than dry food. High carbohydrate intake may contribute to obesity in dogs, so some wet food can prevent weight gain and even promote weight loss. 1. Wet food has high water content and can help dogs maintain hydration.
The short explanation is, yes, wet dog food can cause diarrhea in your dog. But it's not necessarily because of the wet dog food itself. What is this? Sometimes a change in your dog's diet will precipitate diarrhea, so if you go from dry dog food to wet dog food, that could account for the problem.
Recommended Exercise for Small Dogs – Under 10kg
In general medium-sized dogs need at least an hour of exercise a day. You could split this into a couple of 30 minute walks every day, depending on your routine and your dog's energy.
Another sound of contentment is the sigh, usually accompanied by the dog lying down with its head on its forepaws. When the sigh is combined with half-closed eyes, it communicates pleasure; with fully open eyes, it communicates disappointment: “I guess you are not going to play with me.”
How Big Are Medium-Sized Dogs? Dogs weighing around 30 pounds (14 kg) or less are generally considered small dogs and any breed over 55 pounds (25 kg) is usually considered a large dog. This means that medium dogs span a wide range of body weights.
