The Australian Government Department of Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics have recommended a limit of 2 hours per day of sedentary, recreational screen time outside of school hours for teenagers.
Average Screen Time for Teens Over Time
In 2015, American 13 to 18-year-olds averaged 6 hours 40 minutes of screen time each day. That figure rose to 7 hours 22 minutes in 2019. And sits at 8 hours 39 minutes as of 2021. That means that since 2015, average screen time among teens has increased by 1 hour 59 minutes.
An average teenager spends around 7 hours and 22 minutes per day on the phone, whereas recommended screen time is set at no more than two hours max. Even tweens use their smartphones too much at 4 hours and 44 minutes per day.
To break that down further, children ages 8-10 spend around 6 hours per day in front of a screen. That number increases with age, as children 11-14 spend about 9 hours a day on screens, and teenagers 15-18 have an average screen time of 7.5 hours.
What's a healthy amount of screen time for adults? Experts say adults should limit screen time outside of work to less than two hours per day. Any time beyond that which you would typically spend on screens should instead be spent participating in physical activity.

When you set limits and restrict the use of technology you will strengthen your child's desire for it. When it's restricted your child is more likely to binge, hyper-focus, get anxious or sneak time when you're not watching.

Though screen time doesn't cause ADHD, some studies have suggested that children with ADHD may be at increased risk of developing a screen addiction. While parents of children with ADHD can try to be aware of their kid's screen time, most children's screen time falls short of addiction, according to Lightfoot.
The screen overload, which 90% of families reported, had severe effects: It made ADHD symptoms worse. It ramped up other mental health issues, such as anxiety. It made general behavior worse, according to the vast majority – almost 85% – of caregivers.
“There is also evidence of a correlation between media use and the severity of ADHD symptoms. Screens may not cause ADHD, but they may play some role — depending on what limits are placed on them and how a child or teen is using them — in exacerbating the way that ADHD symptoms are expressed.”
The AAP advises keeping children away from screens until they're 18 months old and limiting digital media use for 2- to 5-year-olds to one hour per day.
Experts suggest that you should wait to get your kid a smartphone until at least 8th grade. Along with age, a kid's social awareness, understanding of technology, and maturity should be considered.
"Screen time" is a term used for activities done in front of a screen, such as watching TV, working on a computer, or playing video games. Screen time is sedentary activity, meaning you are being physically inactive while sitting down. Very little energy is used during screen time.
Adults who spend six hours or greater using screen time are more likely to suffer from moderate to severe depression. This increased use in screen time has been shown to be directly correlated with an increased chance of depression in adults.

For some, getting 3-4 hours of screen-on time is more than adequate, others don't consider anything short of 6 to be enough. Even though I'm probably on my phone more often than most (since it's kinda my job), I'm of the opinion that 4-5 hours is a pretty decent goal for manufacturers.
