Grey falls in love with Jamie, who rejects his advances. Still, Grey cannot dismiss his feelings.
Their relationship became irrevocably altered, however, when Grey's feelings surpassed those of a friend, let alone that of a prison governor for one of his charges, and he made the mistake of acting on his attraction. Jamie rejected him completely, and their relationship was shattered.
The kindly Redcoat, who was the antithesis of Captain 'Black Jack' Randall (Tobias Menzies), became good friends with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) at Ardsmuir Prison. Sadly, Lord John fell in love with Jamie but the Highlander didn't reciprocate his feelings with the soldier seeking solace with other men.
It was over one of these chats that John professed his feelings for Jamie. Even though Jamie was unable to return the romantic sentiment it's proven as time goes on that Jamie does love John, similar to the way that Claire loves Frank upon her return.
Book appearances
Hector Dalrymple was Lord John Grey's first lover who was killed at the Battle of Culloden serving in Harold Grey's 46th Regiment of Foot as a Lieutenant .
However, Jamie also saw that John was not like Jack Randell, but a loving, selfless person willing to raise his boy. That touched Jamie's heart in an unexpected way. He kissed John to say “Thank you, I love you, and here's a little something of what you need.”
Lord John agrees to marry Isobel and raise Willie, leaving Jamie eternally grateful — so much so, Jamie offered himself to Lord John because he knows how John feels about him.
Did you guess Lord John Grey? Because yes, Claire and Lord John end up married in book seven, and yes, they drunkenly (and full of grief for the loss of Jamie, whom they both love with all of their heart) consummate that marriage.
At the heart of the story is the romance between Jamie and Claire, two people who ultimately would not let time or distance—even hundreds of years—keep them apart.
Among these is one moment in season three when Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) slept with Mary McNab (Emma Campbell-Jones). The scene took place after Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) returned to the future shortly before the Battle of Culloden after Jamie feared for the safety of his wife and their unborn child.
Jamie denies having slept with her, but the damage to his and to Claire's reputation is done—and the bond between the Frasers and Malva is severed, until just a few weeks later, when Claire finds Malva murdered in the garden.
At the start of the eighth book, Jamie reveals that he is alive. He had been on another ship with Jenny. He does find out that Claire and John married, and it ends his friendship with John.
Later, after Claire has returned to the Ridge, she is confessor to Allan Christie, who explains that he was the one that fathered Malva's child, and then murdered her.
After he's interrogated, John asks Jamie to assure him that Claire will be safe, at which point Jamie reveals that Claire is his wife.
While Brianna knows who William is, William does not yet know that Jamie is his father and that Brianna is his sister. He doesn't discover the connection until late in book seven, when he finds himself in Jamie's company and finally sees the resemblance between them.
One of the big curveball which fans didn't seen coming is in the eighth novel in the series where Claire marries Lord John Grey (David Berry).
Jamie also has two stepdaughters, Marsali MacKimmie Fraser and Joan MacKimmie, from his marriage to his second wife, Laoghaire MacKenzie.
Jamie's Secret is a story about a nine-year-old who loves soccer, playing with her best friend Sadie, and collecting crystals. She loves hugging and climbing trees, watching butterflies, and soaring on her swing. Jamie loves life and everything that points to it.
During this time, Jamie was left close to death and bereft without his wife. However, after some convincing from his sister Jenny Murray (Laura Donnelly), Jamie married Laoghaire.
Some think Jamie's spirit (but not his body) traveled to through time to guide Claire to him; others suggest Jamie had a near-death experience after the Battle of Culloden, and that's why his ghost is 25 when he appears to Frank.
Just as she begins to worry that Jamie might be capable of lying to her, Jamie quells her fear by revealing to her his indiscretion with Mary MacNab, a woman who worked at Lallybroch, while Claire was back in 1968 with Frank and Brianna. This confession soothes Claire, and the two find themselves realigned once again.
As their conversation continues they talk about strengths and faults, Jamie pointing out how Claire's a bad cook, but she's faithful, and she says the same of him.
Did Frank know Jamie was alive? Author Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the book series upon which the Starz TV show is based, has confirmed that it is Jamie's ghost that Frank saw, but she's also stated repeatedly that Jamie cannot travel forward in time.
When it was eventually revealed Roger was missing and Jamie and Claire were dispatched out across the American states to rescue him, Brianna and Lord John married to protect her from Aunt Jocasta's (Maria Doyle Kennedy) determination to pair her niece off.
Since the age of six, William has been raised by Lord John Grey, his legal guardian and husband of Geneva's younger sister, Isobel Dunsany.
