What is grooming? Grooming is when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them. Children and young people who are groomed can be sexually abused, exploited or trafficked.
Sending you sexual messages or images
This might be small at first, like asking you whether you've ever kissed anyone or saying how much they like your body. Someone might share images with you and ask you to share them back.
Groomers often aim to isolate their targets from their family or friends. If they seem reluctant to see you, or they refuse a visit, it might be because someone's manipulating them. You notice that sums of money have disappeared from the person's bank account, or the person claims they cannot pay for food or bills.
Parents or caregivers should also know red flags of what could be grooming behavior. Targeting specific kids for special attention, gifts or activities. Slowly isolating a kid from family members and friends – physically and emotionally.
Predators will:
Develop trust and secrecy: manipulate child by listening to and sympathizing with child's problems and insecurities. Affirm feelings and choices of child. Exploit natural sexual curiosities of child. Ease inhibitions by gradually introducing sex into conversations or exposing them to pornography.
Grooming can take place online or in-person. It's usually employed by a family member or someone else in the victim's circle of trust, such as a coach, teacher, youth group leader or others who naturally have some interaction with the victim.
Adult survivors of this type of abuse often need to address their grooming experience in order to heal from the sexual abuse. If grooming was a part of your sexual abuse, therapy could be helpful in processing this experience and continuing to heal.

Grooming is when a person builds a relationship with a child, young person or an adult who's at risk so they can abuse them and manipulate them into doing things. The abuse is usually sexual or financial, but it can also include other illegal acts.
What are some ways an abuser could use sexting? The act of sexting can be consensual and is not itself a sign of abuse. However, an abuser could use photographs, videos, or messages shared through sexting to maintain power and control over you.
Teens can be embarrassed or exposed, and the pictures can be redistributed. The consequences of sexting can even lead to cyberbullying. It can also cause the victim to lose trust in their relationships, and may even put them on a sex offender registry.
Experts agree that sexting releases happy hormones in the body and takes partners to an alternate state of consciousness.
Targeting the victim – The first stage of grooming
Groomers are calculated and often repeat offenders – they don't want to get caught. Thus, before selecting their victims, abusers often scope out and observe possible 'candidates' and select them based on ease of access to them or their perceived vulnerability.
They might say you'll get in trouble if you don't keep your chat a secret. They try to blackmail you. They say that something bad will happen or they'll stop talking to you if you don't do what they tell you to. If you've already sent images and videos to them, they might threaten to share these with other people.
The trauma experienced by victims of online sexual extortion is like those who experience child sexual abuse in the physical world. There are those same feelings of fear, shame, and guilt.
