Travellers cheques and most credit cards are widely accepted. You can bank at Commonwealth and Westpac branches at Burnt Pine. There's a Commonwealth Bank ATM, and some limited EFTPOS on the island.
Currency used is the Australian dollar. There is a Commonwealth Bank which has the only ATM. Major credit cards are accepted and cash can be withdrawn from Australia Post.
Can I shop duty free on Norfolk Island? Yes, similar to other Australian external territories, there is no limit on the amount of duty free goods you can buy on Norfolk Island. However, when returning to mainland Australia standard duty free concessions will apply.

Hiring a car is the best way to explore the park. There are multiple rental agencies in the township. See the Norfolk Island Tourism website for a full list. There is also a taxi service and a place to hire bicycles – ask at the Visitor Information Centre for details.
The island is not part of the Australian mobile network, so you will need to purchsae a local SIM card to use your mobile phone.
If you plan to explore a bit of the Norfolk Coast without a car, I suggest staying in either Cromer or Sheringham because the transport links are better. You will have access to trains and buses within the region and towards bigger cities like Norwich and even London.
It should be noted, however, that the cost of living is higher on Norfolk Island, the tax burden for lower income earners is higher and, the standard of service provision is lower, than in other States and Territories.
Norfolk Island The Hospital employs 2.8 aged carers to provide aged care support to the 11 long term aged care residents. The care provided is basic care. Hospital Nursing staff are responsible for the nursing care of these residents and supervise the aged carers.
Norfolk Island is technically part of New South Wales, but it's much closer to New Zealand, and part of the submarine ridge that joins Aotearoa with New Caledonia.
Norfolk Island's tap water is clean and safe for drinking. Commonwealth Bank and Westpac both have branches on the island and Visa, Bankcard, Mastercard and most major credit cards are accepted in most establishments on Norfolk however EFTPOS access is limited, as are ATM facilities.
While international roaming using a normal personal SIM is not possible on Norfolk Island, compatible phones which are not locked to another network provider can use the Norfolk Telecom network. Visitors can purchase a Visitor SIM Pack for $30 which offers: 2GB data. 25 mins each of local landline and mobile calls.

There are no animal pests or diseases on Norfolk Island that are not also present in mainland Australia. Two species of mosquitoes were found on Norfolk that do not occur on the Australian mainland (see Appendix 2).
When it comes to swimming beaches on Norfolk Island, Emily Bay Lagoon is at the top of a pretty impressive list. Here your family can splash in the crystal-clear shallows or grab a snorkel and explore our life-filled South Pacific coral reef in calm and protected waters.
As a penal colony Norfolk housed convicts who had reoffended on the mainland; now the island has an arrangement with NSW to jail its convicted criminals. While the island has a low crime rate, the cells have in recent years held two men charged with homicides, in one case for much longer than intended.
The Norfolk Island Police Station is located on New Cascade Road. There are three Police on Norfolk Island that are members of the Australian Federal Police.
Changes to Norfolk Island's immigration laws allow for Australian and most New Zealand citizens to live, work, retire or seek investment and business opportunities in Norfolk Island.
There are plenty of ways to travel to and around north Norfolk without a car. Take the train (and even a steam train!), enjoy breath-taking scenery from the bus, hire a boat or paddle your own way around in a canoe or stand up paddleboard.
While a decent pair of shoes will be all you require for a day of exploring the town, to make the most of our island from hilltop to waterfront, we highly recommend a hire car as the top choice of transport on Norfolk Island. Get exploring over pine-covered hills with the windows down to catch the fresh ocean air.
Average minimum temperatures range from 13C to 15C in the winter and between 18C and 20C in the summer. The lowest temperature ever recorded was 6.2C on 29th July 1953. Rainfall: The median annual rainfall for Norfolk Island is 1302mm, and the annual mean rainfall is 1312mm.

The Tide light rail extends 7.4 miles on an east to west alignment from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center through downtown Norfolk, continuing along the Norfolk Southern right-of-way, adjacent to I-264, to Newtown Road.
