Click here for the main page of the Randall family. Jamie was born in Bozeman, MT, as James Michael Randall to Garrett and Phyllis Randall. His father beat his mother to death when Jamie was three months old. Jamie was then adopted by Evelyn Dutton and her husband John, and he came to live with a ranching family.
Though Jamie was raised by John and Evelyn Dutton, his real parents are Garrett and Phyllis Randall. Since Jamie was a baby when he was adopted he does not remember them. What is this? Garrett went to jail after killing his wife Phyllis when Jamie was just three months old.
Beth, however, seems to be completely ignorant of Jamie's parentage. Her burning anger towards James ensures she uses every possible ammo to hurt him. If she indeed knew about his adoption, she would have used every chance to bring it up. Beth came to know about Jamie and his secret only in season 4.
He explained how he wanted his son to be raised by different parents as Phyllis was a drug addict who had no regard for Jamie. Garrett claimed he killed his wife so he would be sent to prison and Jamie would be taken into care.
Rip Wheeler and Jamie aren't related by blood, and if we're being honest, there's not much that connects them except for the Dutton name. One connection is that they both swore to John Dutton to protect the family and its reputation.
Beth was 15 years old when she got pregnant with Rip's child. Scared to tell her father or Rip about her pregnancy, Beth asked her brother instead. Jamie takes her to an abortion clinic. There, Jamie gets informed that the only way to perform the abortion is for Beth to undergo sterilization.
Beth finds out too, but still believes her least favorite brother had something to do with it. She gives Jamie three options: Spend life in prison, be tortured and killed by Rip, or eliminate Garret himself. Jamie picks door number three, sending his father off with an "I love you" and a bullet to the brain.
The underlying reason for John Dutton's dislike of Jamie is their differing personality and views on life. It is why they often fight, argue, and even work against each other in various stages of their life. Of course, it's also possible that John dislikes Jamie because he's adopted and not a true-blooded Dutton.
In case your memory's been failing you, during the third season the audience is faced with a flashback dating to the moment when Jamie, knowingly, had his sister sterilized. Ultimately, this senseless and downright egotistical act from the Dutton brother, is what led Beth to resent Jamie so much.
Family & marriage
John and Evelyn Dutton were blessed with three more children: Kayce has two brothers (Lee and Jamie) and a sister (Beth).
When Beth was a teenager, she got pregnant. She sought help from Jamie, who assisted her efforts to get an abortion. But, in order to keep the pregnancy from leaking to the press and embarrassing the family, Jamie took Beth to a free clinic on a Reservation, where sterilization was mandatory with abortions.
Why Was Kayce Branded On Yellowstone? John branded his son Kayce (Luke Grimes) as punishment for when Kayce left the ranch to be with Monica (Kelsey Asbille), back when she got pregnant with Tate (Brecken Merrill). Kayce has since forgiven his father for what he did.
Claire Dutton was the sister of James Dutton. Claire and her daughter, Mary Abel, joined her brother, James, and the rest of his family in Fort Worth, Texas, after her husband, Henry, passed away.
A flashback to 1997 shows Evelyn went riding with two of her children, Beth and Kayce. During a moment of Beth's hesitation, Evelyn was bucked off her horse. One of the horses fell over and crushed her. Though she did not succumb immediately, Evelyn died within a few hours.
John Dutton, the family patriarch, has one remaining biological son, the fearless but naive Kayce Dutton. He also has an adopted son, Jamie Dutton, that he considers more of a rival than a son. In the Reddit post, “Yellowstone” fans discuss why John Dutton favors Kayce over Jamie. It may seem obvious to some.
Kayce and John have been estranged for sometime at the beginning of the series. It is later revealed that part of what drove them apart was that Kayce got Monica pregnant and they planned to keep the baby. That is when John forced Kayce to take the brand.
Beth finally learns another deep family secret: John Dutton has been chucking corpses on the Montana border for years; in fact, the episode began with a young Rip (Kyle Red Silverstein), who at the urging of a young John Dutton (Josh Lucas), discards the body of a cowboy who got a little too lippy about his beloved ...
Those are two men who like I just said there's brotherly love and there's competition to an extent and they fight it out like two bulls, and they move on. That's it. That's just the way of life on a ranch, especially the Dutton ranch. There you have it!
It was eventually revealed in Yellowstone season 3 that when she was a teenager, she became pregnant by Rip.
She was pregnant in Season 2 and Jamie is the father of her child. She reemerged in Season 4 and has already given birth to her son.
In Season 4, his biological father even tried to have the Duttons killed in order to make room for Jamie to shine. It seemingly made little sense for the self-serving Jamie to murder his only ally.
In "Yellowstone," we see glimpses of Beth taking on the role of confidante and caretaker for her younger brother, Kayce, as well as her father, John. This may have fostered resentment in Evelyn, who could feel threatened by Beth's usurpation of traditional maternal roles.
