The breed was created by crossing the bulldog, then a longer-legged and more agile dog, with a terrier, possibly the fox terrier or one of the old breeds known as the white English and the black-and-tan terriers.
Pit Bulls were originally bred from Old English Bulldogs (these dogs are similar in appearance to today's American Bulldog) who gained their popularity on the British Isles in a cruel blood sport known as “bull baiting”.
The three elements (Bulldog, Terrier, fighting dog) come together only in the pit bull type dog. “Pit bull” does not include all bully breeds or all fighting dogs.
Bully dogs are descendants from crosses between ancient bulldogs and a variety of British terriers. The crossing of the bulldog and the British terrier produced a breed called the Bull-and-Terrier that combined the muscle power and tenacity of the bulldog with the terrier's alertness, agility and speed.
So while every American Staffordshire Terrier can technically be called an American Pit Bull Terrier, not every American Pit Bull Terrier is an American Staffordshire Terrier.)
Pit bull terriers have been banned from importation into Australia for over 15 years but there are some living in Australia from before the ban. There are also many cross-breed dogs that look similar to pit bull terriers.
Authorities generally agree that the breed can be traced back to the Mastiff-like dogs through the old Bulldog which, when crossed with British Terriers, produced the first "bull and terriers." The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was recognized by the Kennel Club of England in 1935.
Rottweilers are considered to be in the mastiff family. Rottweilers were instrumental in the development of the Doberman Pinscher much later.
The American Bully was started by crossing the American Pit Bull Terrier with other dogs in the bully breed family and sometimes dogs outside the bully family. The American Bully is becoming its own breed, and is not the same breed as the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT).
MYTH: American Bully breeds are among the most aggressive types of dogs. FACT: Bullies are just the opposite. They are sweet-natured and even-tempered dogs who are affectionate and will happily show a stranger love and not aggression.
Bred in Germany in the 1st century, Rottweilers are descended from German Shepherds crossed with the drover dogs and Mastiffs brought there by Roman soldiers. They were used for herding and guarding cattle, and later for pulling carts and wagons.
However, the only way to know whether a dog is one of these breeds is to run a DNA test on the dog–and today's DNA tests aren't exactly cheap. For this reason, most people identify “pit bulls” based on individual visual assessments.

There is no specific breed called a pit bull; pit bulls are either American bullys, American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American bulldogs, or a mix of these breeds.
The Kangal is a large, muscular dog that typically weighs between 100 and 130 pounds. They have been trained to guard sheep and other flocks against giant predators such as wolves, jackals, and bears. The Kangal has a mighty bite, with a bite force of 743 PSI. It is the highest bite force of any dog breed.
