Arabic has at least 11 words for love and each of them conveys a different stage in the process of falling in love. The word 'hawa', for example, describes the initial attraction or inclining of the soul or mind towards another.
In Arabic literature, love is supposed to have seven stages. The seven stages are namely hub (attraction), uns (infatuation), ishq (love), akidat (trust/reverence), ibadat (worship), junoon (madness) followed by maut (death).

The verb 'to love', أحب (ahab) is derived from the root letters and is a common term of endearment not just between lovers, but between friends and families as well. Another word that shares its roots with 'al-hub' is the word for dear, or lover, حبيب (habib).

On that note, hawa can mean love or passion. Plenty of popular Arabic songs use the word in that context, including Lebanese singer Yara's Ah Mennak Ya Hawa and Abdel Halim Hafez's El Hawa Hawaya and Ahwak.
The English equivalent would be darling, my love, dear or sweetheart. Note that habibi (حبيبي) is used when speaking to a man. The female equivalent is habibti (حبيبتي). You can use habibi to express love towards your partner or a family member.
