It is important for permanent weight loss that you do have the motivation coming from within yourself, you're patient, you're positive, you have a passion for losing weight and that you are willing to do the work.
To lose weight, most people need to reduce the number of calories they get from food and beverages (energy IN) and increase their physical activity (energy OUT). For a weight loss of 1–1 ½ pounds per week, daily intake should be reduced by 500 to 750 calories.
Simply stating “I want to lose weight” is too broad. SMART goals should be: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused and Timely. An example of a good SMART goal is: “I will go on a walk on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays around my neighborhood for 20 minutes in order to lose 3lbs by February 23.”
So for three months, or about 12 weeks, a healthy goal is 12 to 24 pounds. Losing weight at this rate ensures that you'll keep it off for the long term. If you have more weight to lose (50 or more pounds), you may lose more weight in the first few weeks, but in general, about a pound or two a week is a healthy target.
