The most common thread types are the inch-based Unified coarse / fine (UNC/UNF) and metric coarse / fine.
There are two common forms of threads: straight threads and tapered threads. Straight threads have a parallel profile that remains the same diameter throughout the part. Tapered threads taper along with the thread profile and become smaller in diameter as the part moves down.
Metric thread is the most widely used today, and can otherwise be referred to as 'ISO Metric' or 'M'. Both coarse and fine thread fasteners are available, and can be supplied in a wide range of materials and sizes – with a number of popular DIN standards.
There are three standard thread series in the Unified screw thread system that are highly important for fasteners: UNC (coarse), UNF (fine), and 8-UN (8 thread).
Common threads per inch sizes are: 4, 4-1/2, 5, 5-1/2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 48, 56, 72, 80. The most common threads in use are the ISO metric screw threads (M) for most purposes, and BSP threads (R, G) for pipes.
United States Standard thread (USS thread), also known as Sellers Standard thread, Franklin Institute thread and American Standard thread, is a standard for inch based threaded fasteners and washers.
All thread rod is manufactured in three different thread series: Unified National Coarse (UNC), Unified National Fine (UNF) and 8-Thread Series (8UN). UNC thread is the most common designation for all thread rods. UNF thread is most often used for precision applications.
Preferred sizes are 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mm, with additional defined sizes halfway between. The standard thread pitch is approximately 14 of the major diameter. The thread form is slightly modified to increase the minor diameter, and thus the strength of screws and taps.

A coarse threaded bolt is specified for most applications unless there is an overriding reason to use a fine threaded bolt (e.g. thorough thread adjustment is crucial for the application). Furthermore, fine thread fasteners are more difficult to obtain.
Polyester/Cotton Sewing Thread
Polyester/Cotton is a multipurpose weight (50) and suitable for all types of fabric, including stretch. This is the most commonly used thread for most of your sewing.
BSP & NPT are two different thread standards that originate from two different countries. BSP stands for British Standard Pipe & NPT stands for National Pipe Taper. BSP, as in the name, is from England while NPT is from the USA.
Although the 60 degree thread angle of the U.S. and metric systems is the most common one, other angles have been used for vee form threads. The Lowenherz Thread uses 53 degrees 8 minutes, and the Swiss Thury and the British Association Threads use 47 - 1/2 degrees.
Unified National Coarse (UNC): This is the most common thread type used in most fasteners. UNC threads do not require cross threading during manufacturing and are known for their high tolerance levels. The reasons are they help the fastener fit deeper in the application but can also be removed easily.
Although an all-purpose polyester thread will work well on most material, the general rule is to use the same type of thread as the fabric. So, for example, if you're sewing with 100% cotton material, use 100% cotton thread and match the thread weight to your fabric.
Kevlar(TM) thread is one of the strongest and most fire retardant commercially available threads. It is about 2.5 times stronger than nylon or polyester, has almost no stretch, does not melt, and decomposes at 800F.

Types of screw threads
Among these ISO metric threads and American National Unified Threads are two most commonly used screw thread profiles.
Your standard thread will often come in a medium 40 or 50 weight. But a huge variety of other threads exist in super fine 100 weight, or super chunky 3 weight options too.
Polyester makes a strong durable thread suitable for all types of sewing. Polyester thread doesn't shrink or fade when washed. And polyester thread doesn't produce a lot of lint, which helps keep you machine clean. Most of the “all purpose” thread at fabric and craft stores is 100% polyester.
The machine uses two threads to sew a seam; each thread comes from a spool: the top thread from the spool conspicuously stationed on top of the machine, the bottom thread from the bobbin, hidden inside.
