Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words. Dyslexia affects individuals throughout their lives; however, its impact can change at different stages in a person's life.
Signs of dyslexia include talking later than other children, trouble learning simple rhymes, struggling to follow directions, or having difficulty learning left and right. In school, signs of dyslexia include struggling with reading, writing, spelling, and languages.
Emotional barriers
The frustration and confusion that comes with trying so hard and not getting the results that peers do, along with teachers and/or parents misinterpreting behaviour as laziness, can cause an emotional barrier for dyslexic people.
Nothing affects your chances at succeeding in school like not having the skills to read, spell, and write. This is, unfortunately, what dyslexia is all about. It can be the one impediment to achieving one's goals in work and life.
People with dyslexia are known for their lack of fine detail strengths – the strengths that result in accurate and precise reading and spelling. On the flip side, the wiring of the dyslexic brain results in global big picture strengths such as strengths in comprehension, word associations, context and gist.
Over the years, students with dyslexia may develop increasing frustration if the reading skills of their classmates begin to surpass their own. Access to effective Structured Literacy teaching will help these students, but they may still experience social and emotional problems.
Visual Thinking
Many people with dyslexia often think in images as opposed to words, which is attributed to the unique activations in their brains. People with dyslexia are also more likely to form 3D spatial images in their minds than non-dyslexic people.
Use multisensory input and activities to give learners more than one way to make connections and learn concepts. For example, use flash cards, puppets, story videos and real objects in the classroom. When learners use more than one sense at a time, their brain is stimulated in a variety of ways.
Multisensory learning engages students in movements and activities that involve touch. This, coupled with the use of visual and auditory materials, creates multiple opportunities for students with dyslexia to absorb and retain information. It also helps take abstract ideas and turn them into something more concrete.
There is a common misconception that dyslexia only affects the ability to read and write. In reality, dyslexia can affect memory, organisation, time-keeping, concentration, multi-tasking and communication.
A dyslexic child may start telling jokes, act out in other ways, or even run away to avoid situations that involve reading.
Frequently has to re-read sentences in order to comprehend. Fatigues or becomes bored quickly while reading. Reliance on others (assistants, spouses, significant others) for written correspondence. Uncertainty with words, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Make reading fun
Use books about subjects your child is interested in, and make sure that reading takes place in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Parents also play a significant role in improving their child's confidence, so it's important to encourage and support your child as they learn.
Advocate for early screening and intervention. Prioritize early literacy as a school/system to ensure kids with dyslexia have access to the instruction they need to achieve literacy in the early grades.”

Imaging research has demonstrated that the brains of people with dyslexia show different, less efficient, patterns of processing (including under and over activation) during tasks involving sounds in speech and letter sounds in words.
The Orton-Gillingham (opens in a new window) approach is the “gold standard” for teaching reading to kids with dyslexia. It focuses at the word level by teaching the connections between letters and sounds. Orton–Gillingham also uses what's called a multisensory approach.
