Coco Chanel was born into an impoverished family. Her father abandoned her and her two sisters to an orphanage and her two brothers to a local family after their mother died. Chanel never married and had no known children, but she looked after her elder sister's son, André Palasse, following her sister's suicide.
Much of Chanel's clothing was made of jersey, a choice of fabric both unusual and inspired. Until the designer began to work with it, jersey was more commonly used for men's underwear. With her financial situation precarious in the early years of her design career, Chanel purchased jersey primarily for its low cost.
Coco Chanel 's earliest attempts to bring the trousers into the ladies' wardrobe, are when she wears men's clothes in order to ride a horse more comfortably.
Coco Chanel's last words to her maid Celine were “You see, this is how you die.” She died in her bed at the Hotel Ritz at 9pm on the 10 January 1971.
She refused to dress royalty
Chanel wasn't one to design for free, even for royalty. WWD's obituary on the designer quotes her saying, “these princesses and duchesses…they never pay their bills. Why should I give them something for nothing? No one ever gave me anything.”
The Wertheimer fortune dates back to 1920s Paris when Pierre Wertheimer funded designer Coco Chanel. His grandsons, brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, control Chanel and are worth about $96 billion. The brothers own three vineyards in France and Napa Valley, and breed and race thoroughbreds.
In late 2014, French intelligence agencies declassified and released documents confirming Coco Chanel's role with Germany in World War II. Working as a spy, Chanel was directly involved in a plan for the Third Reich to take control of Madrid.

In response to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, luxury fashion brand Chanel has imposed a ban on the sale of its products including clothes, perfumes and other luxury items to Russian customers abroad if they plan to take them back to Russia.
Chanel has stepped up its sanctions against Russia by not just closing its stores in the country, but checking if customers are taking their goods back to Russia. Russians are being denied the chance to buy luxury goods even outside the country.
Alain Wertheimer is the chairman of Chanel, the French luxury brand. He owns the company with this brother Gerard, who oversees the watch division. His grandfather Pierre Wertheimer founded it with Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel, the company's namesake.
It is privately owned by the Wertheimer family and has been headquartered in London since 2018.
An unknown seamstress, Coco needed Wertheimer's expertise, American business connections, and capital so the Chanel company partnership equity was owned 70% by Wertheimer, 10% by Chanel herself, and 20% by Chanel's friend, Théophile Bader.
