With Gus and Walt's relationship souring, Gus decides to kill Walt in order for Gale to take over. Gus lies to Gale that Walt's cancer is terminal and if he were to die, Gale must prepare to take over the lab. Walt eventually figures out Gus' plans and orchestrates Gale's death by having Jesse shoot Gale in the head.
Gale asks Gus about the blue meth being produced by chemist Walter White. Gus explains he has reservations about hiring Walt, but Gale insists Gus hire him because of his superior product. In the present, following Walt's order, Jesse Pinkman has killed Gale to foil Gus' plot to kill them.
The argument that he wanted a subordinate doesn't work because Gale hangs onto Walt's every word and will do whatever he says, even moreso than Jesse. He lets Gale go out of necessity and eventually also kills him out of necessity. He even states later in the series that he cared for Gale.
Walt set up Gale to ruin the batch in episode 307 "One Minute." It wasn't until the end of episode 312 "Half Measures" that Walt killed the dealers, which started Gus' attempt to eliminate and replace Walt.
They decide they must kill Gale and debate over who should do it. After Jesse states he's not a murderer, Walt says he will do the job, and Jesse only needs to find Gale's address. Later that evening, Jesse calls Walt and tells him the address.
Others may have learned to cook meth at potentially the same level as Walt and Jesse, but Gus was well aware that they had the highest quality of the product. This is another reason Gus killed Victor instead of Jesse: Walt and Jesse's partnership made them critical to the operation in Gustav's eyes.
Murdering Gale was absolutely necessary to save himself and Jesse at that point, the end of Season 3. He planned for it in advance. And of course, procrastinated it until he was literally forced at gunpoint to make a decision. And that's after begging for his life in front of Mike and Victor.
Breaking Bad
Gale's purpose was to learn Walter White's Blue Sky formula and become the sole meth cook for Gustavo Fring. When Walter accepts the job that Gus had offered, he meets Gale and they seem to share a respect for both of each other due to their love of chemistry.
Skyler White however is aware that Walt was somehow involved in Gale's murder (as it was he who ordered Jesse to do it) though she does not know it was Jesse who pulled the trigger.
The real factor that cemented Walt and Jesse together was the threat to both their lives from Gus, thus requiring elimination of Gale to leave themselves as the defacto meth kings.
In Breaking Bad, who warned Hank (Dean Norris) about the cartel hit and saved his life? It was none other than Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) who contacted Hank about an impending cartel assassination attempt, despite being the one who ordered the hit in the first place.
Trivia. In 2016, Vince Gilligan finally revealed the true reason why Walter broke up with Gretchen and left Gray Matter: he felt inferior to her and her wealthy family, confirming that it was due to his ego and pride.
As Jesse twitches and the gun twitches with him, it moves the point of impact all over Gale's face. He shot Gale in the cheekbone because that's where his twitching happened to point the gun when he finally pulled the trigger all the way.
Throughout the five seasons of Breaking Bad, Walt caused the death of almost 300 people, directly or indirectly. As the character descended into wickedness, Walt didn't necessarily seem to fall under the label of a psychotic murderer.

The pink teddy bear is a recurring motif in Breaking Bad, appearing in several episodes of the show's second season. Its missing eyeball appears later in the series, as Walt kept it in his possession. The meaning and symbolism of both the bear and the eyeball are open to debate and interpretation.

Academics-wise, Gale is Walt's only equal, and his numerous qualifications are a confirmation of his high IQ.

In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
If Gale Hawthorne had been killed by the mutts instead of Finnick Odair, Katniss would be distraught because he was her best friend and her confidant.
