There are several types of mites that can live in your pet's ear, but the most common are Otodectes—tiny, eight-legged parasites that feed on the wax and oils in the ear canal.
Cat Ear Mites
In the case of cats, the most likely organism is otodectes cynotis. The mites feed on the ear wax and other dirt inside a cat's ear. They are normally found in the ear canal and can bring about bleeding in your cat from their bites, as well as repeated scratching due to the itching.
What medicine kills ear mites? Any medicine or product that contains pyrethrins is effective in killing ear mites. However, it is toxic to cats, to be extremely cautious if you use it. Most vets now recommend using over-the-counter medications containing ivermectin instead.
Treatment generally begins with a thorough cleaning of the cat's ears to remove any wax or debris that may shield the mites from topical medications. “There are many topical, oral, and systemic agents,” Dr. Miller notes, “and most—such as ivermectin—are highly effective.
Ear mites are a common and highly contagious issue for cats. These tiny parasites can irritate your cat's ears and skin and result in infections that lead to excessive itching, scratching and eventual health issues. Thankfully ear mites are relatively easy to treat.
Baking Soda. Baking soda can be an effective treatment for ear mites in dogs, but be careful not to allow your dog to ingest it. Mix one cup of warm water with one teaspoon of baking soda. Soak this in a cotton ball and use it to rub your dog's ear.
How long does it take to get rid of ear mites in cats? It will take at least three weeks after treatment begins for the mites to be completely gone. Over the course of this time period, your cat's itchiness should begin to subside as the medication takes effect.
Olive oil, mineral oil or coconut oil—oils are relatively safe to use, and olive oil can kill ear mites by smothering them though it takes many weeks to clear ear mites with this method. However, as before, if your pet has a serious ear infection, she needs proper medication to resolve the infection.
This causes severe itching and, if left untreated, can cause bacterial infections, swelling of the ear canal and eventually partial or total deafness. The mites can also travel all over your cat's body, causing itching and swelling. Again, left untreated they can lead to systemic infections.
Here are a few essential oils that mites hate: Tea Tree oil. Lavender Oil. Eucalyptus Oil.
You'll want to do a thorough cleaning to avoid those trouble makers from coming back and setting up shop in your pet's precious ears … AGAIN! Ear mites can live 4-6 days without feeding on a host. Since they're microscopic they can be living in your carpet or on your couch.
Unfortunately you will always need to treat ear mites in your cat because they will not go away on their own. If treating ear mites in cats is delayed for too long you run the risk of chronic ear infections.
Ear mites are transferred from animal to animal through contact. If your cat is venturing outdoors they may be making friends in the neighbourhood and getting ear mites from them while they socialize. Now don't worry you can cuddle up with you cat or dog and not get ear mites from them.
These parasites are NOT CONTAGIOUS to people, but they are HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS in pets. Ear mites are spread mostly by direct contact with another pet and/or animal that has ear mites. They are especially common in young animals.
A single topical administration of fluralaner solution to cats is highly effective for controlling mixed flea and otodectic mite infestations, showing effective control for 3 months post-treatment.
How to Get Rid of Cat Ear Mites. Apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Pet parents can make a 1:1 mix of apple cider vinegar and water to help treat a mild infestation.
Fill the ear dropper or the syringe with a little olive oil. Add one to two drops in the cat's ear canal opening. Massage the ear area with circular motions to make sure that the liquid enters the ear canal.
Heavily moisten a cotton ball with the ear cleaner. Apply the cotton ball to the base of the ear and fold the ear flap over onto the cotton ball. Massage the base of the ear (you should hear a squishing sound), and then allow your cat to shake his head.
An occasional cleaning may be necessary to help keep an ear issue, such as an infection or mites, at bay. it's difficult for them to groom the insides of their ears. Because of this, your cat may need occasional ear cleanings to help keep issues like ear infections and ear mite infestations at bay.
Schecter recommends looking inside your cat's ears at least once a week. If you notice discharge or a foul odor, their ears need to be cleaned. “If your pet is prone to wax buildup and ear infections, ear cleaning can be an essential part of your cat's hygiene needs,” Schechter told GoodRx Health.
Single-use products are available through your veterinarian, which usually eliminate ear mites after just one dose. The most common of these products, and the one we recommend at RAH, is Revolution.
Active ingredients such as selamectin, moxidectin, flurilaner, and saralaner typically remove an ear mite infection after a single dose. These products absorb through the skin and into the body where they remerge in the skin and ear secretions consumed by the mite.
That being said, how is it that some pets with ear mites do not get cured? One of the most common reasons is that the ear gets full of dead skin, ear wax, ear mite poop and debris from secondary infections.
