Liver spots are flat, brown or black spots that can appear on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun. They have nothing to do with the liver or liver function.
When to see a doctor. Age spots don't require medical care. Have your doctor look at spots that are black or have changed in appearance. These changes can be signs of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer.
These are flat, tan-to-dark spots that look similar to freckles. They usually range from the size of a pencil eraser to the size of a dime, but they could be bigger or smaller. These are what most people typically think of as age spots or liver spots.
Causes. Liver spots are changes in skin color that occur in older skin. The coloring may be due to aging, exposure to the sun or other sources of ultraviolet light, or causes that are not known. Liver spots are very common after age 40.

These spots are called “actinic lentigines,” which are more commonly referred to as sun spots, age spots, or liver spots. These small, gray-brown spots aren't a type of skin cancer. They also don't progress to become skin cancer and don't require any treatment.

Liver spots are not serious and don't require medical care, but a healthcare provider can lighten or remove for cosmetic reasons.
Age spots aren't painful and don't bleed or ooze. You'll want to have these areas examined for skin cancer. Changing. Spots that become asymmetric, have borders that shift, get darker or lighter, or change in diameter should be checked for skin cancer.
If you notice any new spots on your skin, spots that are different from others, or spots that are changing, itching or bleeding, make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of skin color.
Develop on areas of the skin that have received sun exposure. Typically small like freckles, but may grow to as much as ½ an inch in diameter. One or a few smaller age spots may merge together over time.
People may have a reddish purple rash of tiny dots or larger splotches, caused by bleeding from small blood vessels in the skin. If the liver function has been impaired for a long time, people may itch all over, and small yellow bumps of fat can be deposited in the skin or eyelids.
Buttermilk
You can apply buttermilk or yogurt directly to the skin to fight age spots. Saturate cotton balls with the milk to make it easier to apply. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing off. You can use milk or yogurt on the skin daily or until you see the results you are looking for.
A seborrheic keratosis (seb-o-REE-ik ker-uh-TOE-sis) is a common noncancerous (benign) skin growth. People tend to get more of them as they get older. Seborrheic keratoses are usually brown, black or light tan. The growths (lesions) look waxy or scaly and slightly raised.
The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred. The color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue. The spot is larger than ¼ inch across – about the size of a pencil eraser – although melanomas can sometimes be smaller than this.
Vitamin C (or ascorbic acid) is especially fantastic at treating age spots on the face because it depigments or reduces melanin on the skin—thereby removing dark spots.
Although vitamin D is essential for skin health, its primary role is the promotion of melanin formation, which may cause more skin darkening.
When it comes to dark spots on the skin, specifically, vitamin C plays a role in inhibiting melanin synthesis. Since dark spots are often the result of your body's creating more melanin than it should, vitamin C can play a role in reducing melanin and preventing the appearance of dark spots.
Adult acne, or post-adolescent acne, is acne that occurs after age 25. For the most part, the same factors that cause acne in adolescents are at play in adult acne. The four factors that directly contribute to acne are: excess oil production, pores becoming clogged by "sticky" skin cells, bacteria, and inflammation.
Apple cider vinegar contains natural alpha hydroxy acids, which are known to help lighten sun and age spots. Mix equal quantities of apple cider vinegar and water in a bowl. Stir well and apply on the dark spots. Rinse with lukewarm water and finish off with your favourite moisturiser.
