The shaka is made by extending the thumb and pinky fingers and curling in the three middle fingers and waving or rotating the hand back and forth.
It definitely did not originate from Native Hawaiian Culture or anything (and has many (opens in a new tab)conflicting origin stories(opens in a new tab)). However, it is associated with Hawaii, and is a popular surf-culture gesture in the Aloha State and in California.
Though Hang Loose is also a "hang" game, starting out as a trick, it is a kind of greeting among surfers and means something like "stay cool". With this greeting, one pulls index finger, middle finger and ring finger on the inside of the hand and spreads the thumb and the little finger off.
