Mebendazole is the active ingredient in COMBANTRIN®-1, which works by killing threadworms - in a single dose*. Mebendazole effectively prevents the worm from absorbing the vital glucose it needs to survive. Without being able to absorb glucose, the worm eventually loses its energy and dies.
COMBANTRIN® is a highly effective treatment to rid the body of threadworm infections – just one dosage of COMBANTRIN® or COMBANTRIN®-1 kills adult worms within the body, either through paralysis with COMBANTRIN® or by preventing them from absorbing the glucose they need to survive – with COMBANTRIN®-1.
Mebendazole works by preventing the threadworms absorbing sugar, which means they should die within a few days. This medication is 90-100% effective at killing the threadworms, but it doesn't kill the eggs. This is why the hygiene measures outlined below should also be followed for 6 weeks.
Mebendazole kills worms that cause gut infections such as threadworm (sometimes known as pinworm) and other less common worm infections (whipworm, roundworm and hookworm). It works by stopping the worms using sugar (glucose). Without glucose, the cells of the worms lose their energy supply and quickly die.
Most treatments get to work rapidly, killing intestinal worms starting from around 2 to 6 hours after administering the de-wormer.
As mentioned above, a few hours or days after taking the dewormer, you will feel the need to have a bowel movement (to have a bowel movement) to get rid of the worms in your stool. Previous dewormers remove dead or intact worms so you can see them in the stool.
If the treatment is working, the worms your puppy deposits in their stool should be dead. Dead worms are less white and more translucent than ones that are alive. Deworming treatments generally begin working about 12 hours after you give them the deworming treatment.
Any worms in your gut will eventually pass out in your poo. You may not notice this. To avoid becoming infected again or infecting others, it's very important during the weeks after starting treatment to wash your hands: after going to the toilet.
Medicine kills the threadworms, but it does not kill the eggs. Eggs can live for up to 2 weeks outside the body. There are things you can do to stop becoming infected again.
After being dewormed, your dog will be a little slower than usual and this is because their body is recovering. Give your dog plenty of time to rest and recover and keep them as comfortable as possible. In a few days, your dog will be full of energy and ready to go!
Yes, it is normal to see dead threadworms in the persons bowel motions. Depending on the frequency of bathroom visits this can take up to one week. Symptoms of threadworm infection usually disappear within one week of treatment.
The life cycle of threadworms
Threadworms live for about 5-6 weeks in the gut and then die. Before they die, the female worms lay tiny eggs around the back passage (anus). This tends to occur at night when you are warm and still in bed.
A repeat dose is recommended after 2 to 4 weeks if reinfestation occurs. Roundworm, whipworm & hookworm: Adults and children of 2 years and over : 1 chocolate square (100mg) twice each day for 3 consecutive days. Combantrin-1 with Mebendazole chocolate squares may be taken with or without food.
Mebendazole acts by stopping the threadworms from absorbing vital nutrients such as sugars while they are in the gut, which leads to the starvation and death of the worms within a few days.
Pinworm eggs can cling to surfaces, including toys, faucets, bedding and toilet seats, for two weeks. So besides regular cleaning of surfaces, methods to help prevent the spread of pinworm eggs or to prevent reinfection include: Wash in the morning.
Take a single dose, after food. As threadworm is highly contagious, it is important to treat ALL the family, including adults. All human worming products will treat only adult worms present in the intestine at the time of taking the medication.
"Changing and washing bedding can help to remove threadworm eggs within the linen," agrees Dr Luke Powles, clinical director at Bupa UK. "However, be careful when removing the sheets as shaking bedding around may cause the eggs to land on other surfaces and spread infection."
Modern dewormers do not require the user to be on an empty stomach before deworming, so users can deworm at any time, but the best time is to drink early in the morning on an empty stomach or drink after dinner about 2 hours .
After taking deworming medicine, about 8 - 12 hours the medicine will take effect. About 24-72 hours later, the drug will kill the worms. Currently, most of the dewormers available on the market are fast acting with high efficiency.
The initial treatment of threadworms is essential, but leaving it there may be leaving the job unfinished! Threadworm eggs, laid around the anus, are untouched by treatments such as COMBANTRIN® or COMBANTRIN®-1 – and these eggs can hatch after the initial treatment, causing the infection to flare up all over again.
COMBANTRIN -1 Tablets treat threadworm in a single dose – one tablet, once only.
This medication is typically taken in a single dose. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It is to be used once and then again 14 days later. Important: Follow the instructions on the label.
Also, threadworm eggs can survive for up to 2 weeks outside the body (on bedding, clothes, etc).
The most common medicine used to treat threadworm infections is mebendazole. This kills threadworms by stopping them from absorbing the sugars they need to survive – though it cannot kill threadworm eggs.
Chlorine dioxide gas inactivates pinworm eggs in a non-invasive and non-corrosive manner.
