14. The No. 14 can be used in Aesthetic procedures such as "Dermaplaning" which helps to "refinish" the skin's top layers through a method of controlled surgical scraping which exfoliates the epidermis .
#10R Blades
Shorter and more rounded than the 14 it is ideal for getting into smaller more restricted areas of the face and the rounded (bullnose) tip prevents any accidental snagging or scratching thus providing a more effective and consistent finish.
The size 14 dermaplane blade was created specifically for use in dermaplaning procedures. A dermaplaning procedure helps refinish the skin's top layers through a method of controlled surgical scraping that exfoliates the skin. Dermaplaning removes peach fuzz that can trap excess dirt and oil.
15 blade has a small curved cutting edge and is the most popular blade shape ideal for making short and precise incisions. It is utilised in a variety of surgical procedures including the excision of a skin lesion or recurrent sebaceous cyst and for opening coronary arteries.
Scalpel Blade #20
Blade #20 is a large and curved blade. It is used to cut tissues and in procedures wherein, the surgeon has to make an incision or puncture.
The #21 –Similar to the #20, it features a large curved blade commonly used for cutting tissue and other procedures that require a puncture or cut.
The #30 blade can cut very short and be used for sculpting or creating very precise details. It is also often used with a comb, or guard, which allows for longer cuts of ¾” or more. Using a #30 blade and a 1” comb is typical for grooming a puppy or show dog with extremely soft hair.

Commonly Used Surgical Blade Shapes For Dermaplaning
The most popular shapes for Dermaplaning are the No. 10R and No. 14 Surgical scalpel blades.
The most common blade diameter is 7-1/4 inches. Most saws with blade capacities of 6 inches or more can cut through 2-inch dimensional lumber at a 45-degree angle in a single pass. A 5-3/8-inch saw can cut through 2-inch dimensional lumber in one pass at 90 degrees but requires two passes at 45 degrees.
The No. 22 Non-Sterile Surgical Blade is a larger version of the No. 10 blade with a curved cutting edge and a flat unsharpened back edge, used for skin incisions in both cardiac and thoracic surgery and to cut the bronchus in lung resection surgery.
The No. 11 is an elongated triangular blade sharpened along the hypotenuse edge with a strong pointed tip making it ideal for stab incisions needed when lancing an abscess or inserting a chest drain.
The No. 23 is a "leaf-shaped" blade sharpened along its leading edge. Used for making long incisions such as an upper midline incision of the abdomen during the repair of a perforated gastric ulcer.
The number 40 clipper blade is a surgical blade that shaves the body bald. For professional groomers, I recommend using a #30 or #40 blade for pawpads. A #30 blade leaves the hair at 0.5mm.
#7 blades are great for an all-over summer cut on the body of the animal, especially on mixed and wire coated breeds. Blades that have an F in their number, like the 7F model, cut the same length but result in a smoother finish and are usually used on thinner, softer hair or to add a finishing touch to recent shearing.
A short haircut should be done with a #5 blade or shorter. In grooming equipment, blade numbers go backwards from what you would expect. That is, the smaller the number, the longer the hair will be, and the bigger the number, the shorter the hair will be.
Blades come in various sizes, each numbered to indicate the length of cut it will give. Higher numbers give shorter cuts, with a #10 blade leaving about 1/6” of length. #10 blades are ideal for very short summer haircuts and for clipping inside the ears, around the backside and under the hind legs of any breed.
24 is more semi circular in shape and is again sharpened along its leading edge. Used for making long incisions in general surgery and also in autopsy procedures the No. 24 fits handles 4, 4L, 4 Graduated & 6B.
A number of complementary handles exist that can be used with #15 blade for best results: Bard-Parker handle [Figure 6]: Flattened scalpel handle #3 and #7 are commonly used with the #15 blade. #3 is most frequently used for dermatosurgery whereas #7 for plastic surgery.
