Emotional intelligence in leadership is comprised of empathy, social skills, self-awareness, self-regulation and motivation. These are all teachable soft skills that are the focus of our online leadership and management courses.
The finding of the study showed that introvert, intuition, feeling and judging (INFJ) personality type were more emotionally intelligent than the extrovert, sensing, thinking and perceiving (ESTP) personality type.
In other words, highly emotionally intelligent people use emotions to help direct their attention and think critically to achieve their goals. For example, feeling angry helps people negotiate, and an emotionally intelligent person may listen to angry music before negotiating a salary raise.
Emotionally intelligent people tend to respond appropriately to emotional situations, and don't tend to have outbursts or lash out at others. They tend to be more even-tempered, to think clearly under pressure, and to take the time to feel their way through a problem rather than reacting in the moment.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Emotional intelligence is distinct from IQ. “Your EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them,” Harvard education professor Howard Gardner explains. In some ways, EQ is far more important and valuable than IQ.
A THOROUGH EMOTIONAL VOCABULARY
Remember, EQ is the ability to identify and understand emotions. Research done by Travis Bradberry, who is the author of “Emotional Intelligence 2.0,” suggests that only about 36% of people have this ability.
All people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur. Our research shows that only 36% of people can do this, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions.
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize and manage one's own and others' emotions, empathy is the ability to understand how others feel, whereas alexithymia represents the difficulty in feeling and verbally expressing emotions.
Other leaders that come to mind for me personally are many of the individuals' religions were founded around: Gautama Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Abraham… These individuals exuded high emotional intelligence and awareness at the utmost level.
Spatial intelligence or picture smart is a quality that is perhaps the rarest of all the nine Howard Gardner categorized. Human life is big, human intelligence is even bigger. It is impossible to categorize human intelligence.
Emotionally intelligent people improve the quality of their relationships, cultivate leadership skills and garner the respect and love of others, all leading to greater personal happiness.
Having a high IQ does not automatically indicate a high EQ, while having a high EQ may indicate a high or average IQ at least and predict success at work better than IQ alone. While IQ can predict academic success, it may not necessarily lead to success in life whereas EQ predicts success and effectiveness in life.
Mental Intelligence (IQ) - This refers to an individuals ability to apply knowledge usually acquired through training. Emotional Intelligence (EI) - This refers to an individual's ability to recognize the emotion's and different feeling's of their own and other people around them.
The average EQ score is in the range of 90 – 100, whilst the perfect EQ score is 160. What does an EQ score actually mean?
The four domains of Emotional Intelligence — self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management — each can help a leader face any crisis with lower levels of stress, less emotional reactivity and fewer unintended consequences.
The way that smart people handle toxic people says a lot about their psychological abilities. They don't let themselves be steamrolled. They know how to set limits and they're aware of the impact that damaging relationships can have on their well-being.
