Lamb. In contrast to beef, Australian lamb exports were up 7% from 2021 to 284,257 tonnes, the largest export figure on record. The US and China remained the two largest export markets, with exports to the US growing by 6% to 75,453 tonnes and China falling 6% to 52,151 tonnes.

Sheep meat and beef are Victoria's two largest meat export products and represented 44 per cent and 39 per cent respectively of the total value of meat exports in 2021-22. Sheep meat exports increased by 35 per cent in value and 13 per cent by volume on the previous year.
Brazil is expected to remain the largest beef exporter with beef production increasing slightly in 2023.
What Country Produces the Most Beef in the World? The largest producer of beef in the world is the United States, which produces 12,379,000 metric tons of beef each year, accounting for 20.44% of world beef production.

Despite our relatively small population, Australia has the 7th largest population of cattle in the world (including dairy cows). And a whopping 46% of these are located in Queensland! Australia is also the 7th largest producer of beef & veal in the world.
Australia is a relatively small beef producer on a global scale. Though our small population means that consumption is low which allows Australia to export a significant volume of beef each year. Australia exports to a number of different markets, the largest of these is Korea, Japan and America.
2/ Australian beef is packed full of flavour (and nutrition)
In Australia, around 97% of cattle is grass fed thanks to our plentiful grazing pastures. Many steak aficionados prefer the taste of grass-fed beef as it tends to be more flavoursome and has a classic “meaty” profile.

Record exports were primarily caused by strong increases in the average Australian export price of lamb (+21%) and mutton (+19%), compared to the previous three-year average. The US is Australia's largest sheepmeat market by value, China is Australia's largest sheepmeat market by volume.
(Beef exports in India include carabeef). Seven (7) countries exported more than 1 billion pounds of beef in 2020: Brazil, Australia, the United States, India, Argentina, New Zealand and Canada. Brazil accounted for roughly 24% of the world's beef exports in 2020.

Australia's annual exports to China of frozen and chilled beef products were about 185,000 tonnes in 2022, but it was just beaten by the US with around 192,000 tonnes of beef exports across chilled, frozen and offal products.
Beef cattle are reared outdoors in all Australian states and territories. Southern areas with good pasture have herds with a high density of stock and northern areas, with less feed, have herds with a low density of stock. Queensland and New South Wales account for 69% of beef and veal production.
