Permethrin lotion 1% is approved by the FDA for the treatment of head lice. Permethrin is safe and effective when used as directed. Permethrin kills live lice but not unhatched eggs. Permethrin may continue to kill newly hatched lice for several days after treatment.

A dermatologist may prescribe ivermectin . This is a tablet taken twice, 7 days apart. It is highly effective in treating head lice.
Spinosad (Natroba).
Spinosad is approved for adults and children age 6 months and older. It can be applied to dry hair and rinsed with warm water after 10 minutes. It kills lice and nits and usually doesn't need repeated treatment.
The odourless spray kills 100% of head lice and eggs in 15 minutes. You just need to hold the spray about 10cm from the dry hair and then cover all the hair and the scalp. Then a good massage from roots to tips paying particular attention to the neck and behind the ears and leave the product on for 15 minutes.
Leave the cream on for 8-12 hours for scabies, or 12 hours (overnight) for crab lice. After this time, you should remove the treatment from your skin by having a bath or a shower. If you need to wash your hands during the treatment time, remember to re-apply some cream to your hands afterwards.
You can use Lyclear whenever it is required for head lice infestations, as indicated within the direction for use. Normally, 1 or 2 treatments (depending on the treatment chosen) will suffice to get rid of head lice.
“Combing through wet hair to remove live lice and nits every couple of days, applying occluding products that suffocate lice such as mayonnaise, coconut oil, or petroleum jelly is another approach to treating lice at home,” says Dr. Camp.
Petroleum jelly (Vaseline).
Like olive oil, many moms swear by this (other options: styling gel or mayonnaise). The thick jelly supposedly suffocates lice by clogging their breathing holes. For best results, coat the hair and scalp, cover it overnight with a shower cap, and wash out the next morning. Comb for nits.
The conditioner does not kill lice but stuns them for about 20 minutes enabling easier removal. The long toothed metal comb will remove nits and the stunned head lice. Wipe the comb on a white tissue and check for any lice or nits.
The head lice may have become resistant to the treatment. If the treatment used does not kill the head lice, your health care provider and pharmacist can help you be sure the treatment was used correctly and may recommend a completely different product if they think the head lice are resistant to the first treatment.
Prescription creams or shampoos may help eliminate head lice when over-the-counter treatments aren't effective. To catch the full life cycle of head lice, treatment should be used more than once. Using only one treatment will not affect head lice that are still in egg stage.
A preventative shampoo and spray can break the life cycle. A shampoo that kills lice before they can lay eggs is critical for closing the “bridge” from one head to another.
Vinegar contains properties that kill and get rid of nits and lice. This mixture should be applied directly to the whole scalp. Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of warm water. Next, distribute this mixture onto the scalp and cover your hair with a hair cap.
Do not use a conditioner. It can keep the lice medicine from working. Rinse well with warm water and towel dry. Do not use the towel again until it has been laundered.
However, if you are trying to find out how to get rid of nits using vinegar, you should know that using vinegar to kill nits or lice eggs is totally ineffective. Vinegar has no negative effect on the lice eggs. What it will do is sting like crazy if there is any kind of cut on the scalp.
Neem oil
Armed with a pungent smell and antibacterial properties, neem oil is one of the most effective home remedies to remove lice eggs from hair. Its strong smell repels lice, and some compounds in neem oil disrupt the life cycle of lice.
How to Treat Super Lice. If you have active lice, you should start by using pyrethrin shampoo or other over-the-counter lice treatments. Make sure to carefully comb your hair with a nit comb every night, and wash and dry linens, clothing, hats, and scarves. Repeat the treatment after 7 days.
It is not usually possible to get rid of lice in one day, as an infestation needs to be treated. However, there are treatments that can help get rid of lice and symptoms caused by lice more quickly. Lice infestations must first be treated by improving the hygiene of the infected person.
