Diamond rain forms when hydrogen and carbon found in the interior of these planets are squeezed by the high pressure and form solid diamonds that sink slowly further into the interior. The research has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
As the diamonds grow, they may fall deeper into the atmosphere. In the lower depths of Saturn and Jupiter, the temperature and pressure conditions are so extreme that the diamonds can melt into liquid, forming diamond "rain" drops.
On Saturn it occasionally rains diamonds.
Diamond rain on ice giants
The diamond rain phenomenon is believed by some scientists to take place on Uranus and Neptune in our solar system.
Uranus and Neptune are two of the many exciting and mysterious objects in our universe that the James Webb Space Telescope will soon begin to explore. Temperature and pressure conditions are so extreme on these planets that carbon atoms could be crushed into diamonds in their atmospheres.
A massive gas giant orbiting a star about 855 light-years from Earth, WASP-121b may have metal clouds and rain made of liquid gems, according to new research. A study showing how water atmospherically cycles between the planet's two sides published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Unlike most rocky, icy asteroids, the Psyche asteroid—located between Mars and Jupiter—contains a motherlode of metal, including gold, iron, and nickel.
As mentioned above, the temperatures are so high on the day side that minerals melt and vaporize to form clouds that constitute the planet's thin atmosphere. The clouds of vaporized mineral clouds are then carried over to the planet's cold side where they likely precipitate as lava rain.
Glaciers made of nitrogen ice creep across its surface, hazes cycle through its puffy atmosphere, and dark organic compounds rain down.
Oceans of Liquid Diamond May Exist On Neptune and Uranus.
High pressure experiments suggest large amounts of diamonds are formed from methane on the ice giant planets Uranus and Neptune, while some planets in other planetary systems may be almost pure diamond. Diamonds are also found in stars and may have been the first mineral ever to have formed.
Scientists at NASA have recently announced that they found a planet that is almost identical (about 95%) to Earth's size and shape and has a rocky surface. Named TOI 700 e, this new planet orbits within its star's habitable zone, which also hints at the presence of water on its surface.
New research by scientists apparently shows that it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn. In fact the planets have the capability to create 1000 tonnes of diamonds a year.
Saturn - Minus 220°F (-140°C)
While the red planet's thin atmosphere and bitter cold temperatures keep these frozen clouds from ever falling in the form of rain and snow we see here on Earth, there is actually a type of precipitation on Mars. "This precipitation most likely takes the form of frost," NASA explains.
Uranus holds the record for the coldest temperature ever measured in the Solar System: a very chilly -224℃. The temperature on Neptune is still very cold, of course – usually around -214℃ – but Uranus beats that. The reason why Uranus is so cold is nothing to do with its distance from the Sun.
On the dwarf planet Pluto, the reddish color is likely caused by hydrocarbon molecules that are formed when cosmic rays and solar ultraviolet light interact with methane in Pluto's atmosphere and on its surface.
Answer. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) downgraded the status of Pluto to that of a dwarf planet because it did not meet the three criteria the IAU uses to define a full-sized planet. Essentially Pluto meets all the criteria except one—it “has not cleared its neighboring region of other objects.”
Snow occurs only at the coldest extremes of Mars: at the poles, under cloud cover, and at night. Cameras on orbiting spacecraft can't see through those clouds, and surface missions can't survive in the extreme cold. As a result, no images of falling snow have ever been captured.
CAMBRIDGE, England — Earth was nothing more than a giant ocean of lava 3.6 billion years ago, according to new research. The planet's oldest rocks show that the planet's magma sea was hundreds of miles deep and stretched across Earth's surface.
The unexpected size of the newly discovered world, called TOI 5205b, has led researchers to call it the “forbidden planet.” About the size of Jupiter, it was spotted by researchers using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.
Kid-Friendly Venus
Even though Mercury is closer to the Sun, Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. Its thick atmosphere is full of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, and it has clouds of sulfuric acid. The atmosphere traps heat, making it feel like a furnace on the surface.
Astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element.
A NASA mission aims to reveal a massive metal asteroid between Mars and Jupiter called 16 Psyche estimated to contain a core of iron, nickel, and gold worth $10,000 quadrillion.
As we said, the big ball of awesome is worth upwards of $700 quintillion, which, in numeric terms, is 700,000,000,000,000,000,000.
