Probiotics may reduce liver inflammation
Fatty liver disease is closely tied to inflammation. The condition can lead to increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, or the compounds that cause inflammation. And as you just learned, probiotics may be able to reduce that inflammation and soothe your liver.
Several probiotic strains have particular abilities to improve liver function through the modulation of the gastrointestinal tract. These improvements were mostly observed with Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus or multispecies probiotic therapy (23, 27).
Many nutrients, such as vitamin E, milk thistle, berberine, curcumin, melatonin, probiotics, and omega-3 fatty acids, have been found to benefit those with NAFLD in clinical trials.
According to the American Liver Foundation, there are no medical treatments – yet – for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. So that means that eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are the best ways to both prevent liver damage from starting or reverse liver disease once it's in the early stages.
