Portuguese people are welcoming, easy-going and friendly
As in all countries, there are some differences in the people depending on where you are, and in Portugal you'll see clear differences between those from the city and the countryside, and even between people from the north of the country and the Algarve.
Most Portuguese have typical Mediterranean features like brown eyes, brown hair, and a height of less than 6 feet.
I'd say slightly wavy hair is the most common, followed by straight hair, then strongly wavy hair and the least common curly hair. Overall Mediterraneans have a lower frequency of straight hair than northern Europeans, but majority curly hair is only in Subsaharan Africans.
The Portuguese people's heritage largely derives from the pre-Roman Indo-European (Lusitanians, Conii) and Celtic peoples (Gallaecians, Turduli and Celtici), who were later Romanized after the conquest of the region by the ancient Romans.
Ethnically, the Portuguese people form 95% of the total population in Portugal. The Portuguese people are mainly a combination of ancient paleolithic populations, and the proto-Celtic, Celtic and Iberian tribes, para-Celtic Lusitanians.
Did you know that the Northern part of Portugal, from the Rio Douro, has genetic and cultural ties with Celtic nations like Ireland, Galicia, Asturias, and even the Basque Country. So, yes, the Portuguese are Celts, in a certain sense.
We believe one of the reasons is that super-straight hair — also known as type 1a hair — is so rare. In fact, it's the rarest hair type. Only 2% of the world's population has 1a hair. It's mostly found in people of Asian descent.
Naturally, straight hair is the strongest hair type, which means it doesn't break easily and tends to grow quicker. You may feel like you typically have an oily hair texture. That's because the oil produced by your scalp can easily work its way down to the ends of your hair quicker than wavy or curly hair.
In Portugal, the national average of the population shows 11% of varying traces of blondism, peaking at 15% blond people in Póvoa de Varzim in northern Portugal.
Most have brown eyes, however 20–49% have some shade of light eyes. My guess would be 30% have blue to green shades in eye colour.
The two main symbols in the Portuguese flag are the armillary sphere, in yellow, and the Portuguese shield, in red.
With over 200 million native speakers, Portuguese is the second most popular language in South America and the sixth most spoken language worldwide. The language originated from Latin and was developed two millennia ago. Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are the two main variants of the language.
The Portuguese have an open-minded society but place a greater importance on religious values than those in other western European nations. In Portuguese culture, people and relationships are considered more important than time, so punctuality is not as emphasized.
It has been reported that Asian hair is generally straight and is the thickest, while its cross-section is the most round-shaped among these three. Caucasian hair is generally straight or wavy and is the thinnest, while its cross-section is relatively elliptic.
Which hair colour do women think is the sexiest? Most women think brunette hair is the sexiest, as 25% of those polled favoured this option. Womens' second preference is blonde, which was voted as the sexiest hair colour by 19.6% of women. Again, red took third spot, accounting for 11.8% of womens' votes.
Type 2C hair waves start from the scalp and are thicker than other Type 2 subcategories. This coarse hair type is the most prone to frizz and forms an “S” shape when dry.
The rarest skin color in the world is believed to be the white from albinism, a genetic mutation that causes a lack of melanin production in the human body. Albinism affects 1 in every 3,000 to 20,000 people.
The rarest natural hair colour is red, which makes up only one to two percent of the global population. You commonly see these hair colours in western and northern areas of Europe, especially Scotland and Ireland. However, natural redheads may not exist for much longer.
With regard to Portuguese culture more broadly: Lusitano/a, or Luso/a for short, defines anyone of Portuguese descent or origin, while lusitano/a is the corresponding cultural adjective; these are equivalent to English Lusitanic.
Archaeological evidence from the Iron, Bronze and Megalithic periods charts the earliest contacts between the Iberian Peninsula and Ireland. And, in recent years, DNA analysis suggests that, dating from the last Ice Age, the Portuguese-Iberian peoples were ancestors to the Gaelic Irish.
The Moors were in Portugal until 1294, but during this time controlled from Spain. They ruled Lisbon (which they called “Lashbuna”) as well as the southern, central, and most of the northern regions. Besides Lisbon, other cities of great Moorish influence were Beja, Coimbra, Santarém, and Silves.
