What shows up on an enhanced DBS check? An enhanced check contains the same information as a standard DBS check plus any extra information held about you on local police records. It will only include this extra information if the Chief Police Officer considers it relevant.
A DBS check has no official expiry date. Any information included will be accurate at the time the check was carried out. It's up to you to decide when a new check is needed.
An Enhanced DBS Check shows similar details to a Standard DBS Check but will contain more information, which can be necessary for some roles. In addition to conviction, auctions and reprimands, an Enhanced DBS check will also show information held by local police forces.
An enhanced DBS check for a cleaner will involve a search for any spent and unspent convictions, reprimands, cautions, warnings and non-conviction information held by relevant police forces.
While official recommendations suggest a DBS should be renewed every three years, some organisations have set policies surrounding when they request rechecks. This timescale can vary from six months to every two years.
The completion time for an enhanced DBS check ranges from 24 hours to 14 days. The time to receive an enhanced DBS certificate can take around 4-8 weeks. In rare circumstances, it can take longer than 8 weeks.
About the barred list – for people dismissed from policing through the Police Conduct and Performance Regulations – and the advisory list. The barred and advisory lists were introduced as part of the government's commitment to improving police integrity.
Standard and enhanced checks
The person being given a DBS check (the applicant) can track the progress of their standard or enhanced application using the DBS tracking service. They will need their application reference number and date of birth to track the application.
As mentioned earlier, not all convictions are cleared from an individual's record and some remain forever. This means that certain crimes will always show up on a DBS check, regardless of the level of check. Serious crimes of a violent or sexual nature will always remain on a person's criminal record.
Listed offences
If you received a conviction or caution for a listed offence it will not be protected. Listed offences include serious violent or sexual offences and other offences, which are relevant to the role of a future registered doctor. They also include equivalent offences for those committed outside of the UK.
An enhanced disclosure is a type of disclosure used to help employers make sure their employees or volunteers, are suitable for certain types of work. You may need an enhanced disclosure if you apply: to adopt a child. for a gaming or lottery licence for your business.
If you're still in your rehabilitation period following a criminal conviction, your conviction is unspent. Any custodial sentence over two and a half years stays unspent. If you were found guilty of a criminal offence by a court, following the specified time-period, your conviction will be considered “spent”.
There are three types of DBS checks:
Basic DBS. This checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, final warnings, and reprimands. Enhanced DBS. This is for people who work with children and vulnerable adults.
If you have been arrested, you must declare it whether or not that arrest resulted in a conviction. The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not extend to the USA so you must declare all convictions regardless of whether they are classed as spent or not.
The average time is 8 weeks, but for people with many previous addresses or changes of names, this could take longer. In other cases, the checks may be very straightforward and completed within less time.
The Disclosure and Barring Service will reject applications with basic errors in the name and address fields. If your form is rejected for this reason, you'll have to start the process from scratch.
If the DBS Certificate is Lost After Receipt
If you had to apply for a Basic DBS check yourself, then you'll have to pay the application fee again and wait for the new certificate to be processed and dispatched.
Standard DBS check
This is a check of your criminal record which will show details of all spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings held on central police records (apart from protected convictions and cautions).
Some people may have a DBS completed through another organisation. 6) Details of criminal offences will be displayed here. 'NONE RECORDED' means that the individual has no offences on their record. 7) Details if the person is not suitable to work with children in schools, social work and some voluntary settings.
A standard DBS check is more detailed than the basic check, and in addition to disclosing any of your unspent convictions, a standard check may disclose older information which is felt to be relevant to the position which you are applying for.
'Minded to Bar' – arises where a person has been convicted or cautioned for a non- automatic barring offence or DBS has received information of a nature leading to it considering an inclusion on a barred list.
Dear [name], I am writing to you regarding the application made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for an Enhanced Criminal Records Check submitted by [“you” or applicant name] for an [Enhanced Disclosure/Enhanced Disclosure with Barred List Check] for the [enter workforce(s)].
Stage 4 of a DBS Check
This is done to see if there is any relevant information that requires disclosure on the certificate, which hasn't already been. Some police forces are constantly battling through a backlog of applications, perhaps due to limited staffing or internal limitations.
The Local Police Check (Stage 4) is often the stage that takes the longest in the application process. DBS sometimes needs to pass applications to one or more local police forces for them to check. Some police forces have backlogs of applications due to limited staffing or internal limitations.
Not really. There's not a standard fast-track service as there is to apply for your passport or other documentation. If you're applying for an enhanced DBS check with an additional search of the Barred Lists, there is another option.
