Lucas is actively moving on and trying to find the new him and wanting happiness and something new and exciting and to be cool, and Max is not ready to do that. She doesn't want to do it.
Max is annoyed with Lucas throughout season 3, as he refuses to show off more of his romantic side. Eleven is having similar problems with Mike, so naturally, the two girls bond. Girl power!
“You're not going to die, please hang on,” Lucas says, as Max takes a turn for the worse and actually dies in his arms — and knowing, now, that she technically comes back to life doesn't make the scene any less tragic.
It is looking likely that Max will be blind as one of the last things she said to Lucas was that she couldn't see anything. She also told him that she couldn't feel "anything", leading many people to think she could also be paralysed.
The fan-favorite character ended the season in a coma with her bones broken and eyes blinded at the hands of Vecna. Max technically died for one whole minute before Eleven revived her friend, but Eleven's powers weren't enough to bring Max fully back to life.
Why does it happen and how did Lucas make it up and get back every single time? Theories?
Caleb McLaughlin
While it may be true that Caleb McLaughlin's character, Lucas, gets one of the cutest relationships on the show -- his love story with Max -- McLaughlin is not reported to be seeing anyone off-screen.

The reason that Eleven couldn't find Max is actually pretty simple -- Max had already died. That means her soul had already been absorbed into Vecna's consciousness. So, while Eleven restarted Max's heart and brought her body back to life, she was trapped inside of Vecna's hive mind.
Of course, the real reason Max became Vecna's victim was because creators the Duffer brothers and producer/director Shawn Levy wanted to showcase Sink's talent and really allow her to get some meaty material to work with this season.
