Maritime/Coastal - Bondi's Black Sunday The 6 February 1938 was a particularly hot day that attracted approximately 35,000 people to Bondi beach, Sydney. The surf was rough, with a record of 74 people pulled from the waves before lunch.
In 1938 on a day known as Black Sunday some 200 people were swept into the sea in one moment after several huge waves hit people gathered on the sand bar. Five died and dozens were injured in the deadliest day on record at the beach. Earlier in the day lifeguards had pulled 74 people from the surf in one hour.
Sunday, 6th February, 1938, appeared a typical summer's day on Bondi Beach. The crowd of 35,000 enjoyed the surf and sand, and waves were breaking evenly about 100 feet off shore.
Bondi gets busier as the day wears on. By midday, traffic can clog the main routes down to the shoreline in summer, so book an early lunch on the terrace at Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, popular for its fresh-from-the-water seafood, and then get out.

There have been 13 reported shark contact incidents at Bondi Beach since records began, one of which is known to have been a hoax. Of these incidents only two fatalities have occurred, a very low number given the large number of swimmers who regularly use Bondi Beach.
