Shires are the tallest horses in the world. It is not uncommon for one of these beauties to measure 20 hands. In fact, the biggest horse ever measured is the Shire gelding Sampson, who is now called Mammoth. Mammoth was born in England in 1846 and stood at 21.2-1/2 hands, over 7 feet 2.5 inches tall!
“Big Jake” was a 20-year-old Belgian who lived on Smokey Hollow Farm, an 85-acre farm in Poynette. Big Jake was also the Guinness World Record holder for the world's tallest living horse.

As a general rule a horse on average is able to carry a rider which is the same as or approximately 20% of the horse's weight.
