Be advised that death due to dehydration can occur in 3 days (or less in hot weather) and no one normally lives more than about 5-6 days without water.
Not Urinating or Very Dark Urine
Normal urine should be pale yellow, like lemonade. If your urine is a darker color, similar to apple juice, this could be a sign of moderate to severe dehydration. If you're not urinating at all, you're most likely severely dehydrated. This requires immediate medical attention.
Low blood volume shock (hypovolemic shock).
This is one of the most serious, and sometimes life-threatening, complications of dehydration. It occurs when low blood volume causes a drop in blood pressure and a drop in the amount of oxygen in your body.
The GDG identified several 'red flag' signs in dehydration whose presence should alert the clinician to a risk of progression to shock (see Table 4.6). These were altered responsiveness (for example, irritable, lethargic), sunken eyes, tachycardia, tachypnoea, and reduced skin turgor.
Severe dehydration is life threatening for children and adults. You should call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest urgent care center for these symptoms: Urinating small amounts of dark-colored urine.
A person needs IV fluids when they become dangerously dehydrated. Serious dehydration may occur when you: Are sick (vomiting and diarrhea). Exercise too much or spend too much time in the heat without drinking enough.
When we lose too much water, our bodies may become out of balance or dehydrated. Most doctors divide dehydration into three stages: 1) mild, 2) moderate and 3) severe.
For more severe dehydration or heat emergency, you may need to stay in a hospital and receive fluid through a vein (IV). The provider will also treat the cause of the dehydration. Dehydration caused by a stomach virus should get better on its own after a few days.
Moderate to severe dehydration needs medical attention. Go to an emergency room or call 911. Untreated severe dehydration can cause seizures, permanent brain damage, and even death. Call your family doctor if you're not sure if your symptoms are serious enough to go to the hospital.
Urinalysis. Tests done on your urine can help show whether you're dehydrated and to what degree. They also can check for signs of a bladder infection.
The simple answer is that IV fluids hydrate you faster and better than drinking water, that's why over 60% of people who come through hospital emergency rooms are treated with IV.
It can take just 5 minutes to begin rehydrating your body. On the other hand, if you drink water while eating, your body will prioritize digesting food before water. This often takes up to 120 minutes to digest water and rehydrate your body.
Of course, with IV fluids you begin to be hydrated immediately. The fluids go directly into your blood stream, increasing your body's fluid volume right away.
Lack of urine
If you or a loved one has gone more than 24 hours without urination, it is important to go directly to the emergency room.
Time from hospital admission to rehydration was no greater than 12 hours for 79.3% (165) and no greater than 24 hours for 94.7% (197). However, hospital stay was generally substantially longer.

Though various home remedies serve the purpose, the IV hydration process offers you a quicker and more effective dehydration relief than ordinary water. The difference is that IV fluids comprise a saline solution made of vital vitamins and minerals that help restore your body's water-electrolytes balance.
It hydrates you
This myth comes from a study funded by Gatorade that found people who drank their product were better hydrated than if they drank water—but only because they drank more fluids. If you drank the same volume of water versus Gatorade, you'd be equally hydrated.
Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in. For most people, drinking water is the best way to stay hydrated and rehydrate.
Although it's now possible for individuals to self-administer an IV, this is NOT recommended due to safety concerns. A licensed professional knows how to insert an IV to minimize the chance of infection or causing damage to your veins.
If you are dehydrated, it's important to rehydrate as quickly as you can. With beginning symptoms of dehydration, you can rehydrate by consuming fluids that contain electrolytes, such as sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions.
Reassure the casualty and help them to sit down. Give them plenty of water. You can also use an oral rehydration solution. These can help to replace fluid as well as the correct salt and other minerals they've lost.
