Baby Bonus is an income tested payment and is payable to families whose estimated combined adjusted taxable income is $75,000 or less in the 6 months following the date the child first entered your primary care. To get Baby Bonus: you or your partner must be the primary carer of your child.
Newborn Supplement is paid with Family Tax Benefit Part A through regular fortnightly payments or as part of a lump sum claim after the end of the financial year.
Background. The payment now known as Baby Bonus was introduced by the Howard Government in 2004. It was then called 'Maternity Payment' and was a non-means tested lump sum replacement of the First Child Tax Rebate and the Maternity Allowance.
For your first child, the maximum total amount you can receive is $1,785.42 for the 13 weeks. For subsequent children the maximum total amount is $596.05 for the 13 weeks. If you're eligible for the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A base rate or more, you'll get the maximum rate of Newborn Supplement.

Payment methods
We make the Family Allowance payment on the 1st working day of each quarter, that is, four times a year: in July for July, August and September. in October for October, November and December. in January for January, February and March.
Types of payments include: Newborn Upfront Payment – a lump sum payment per child. Newborn Supplement – up to 13 weeks per child. Parental Leave Pay – up to 18 weeks while you take time off work to care for your newborn baby.
The $2,000 child tax credit instituted by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) is scheduled to expire in 2025. Unless extended, the credit will revert to the CTC made permanent by the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA).
Federal Child Tax Credit
Originally, the tax credit was $400 per child under age 17 and nonrefundable for most families. In 1998, the tax credit was increased to $500 per child under age 17. The tax credit amount increased again and was made refundable in 2001 to coordinate with the Earned Income Tax Credit.
But the expanded credit expired at the end of 2021, and by one estimate, 3.7 million more children fell back into poverty in January of this year.
