What causes flashes and vitreous detachment? As one grows older, the vitreous humor that fills the center cavity of the eye becomes more liquid and begins to shrink. This causes the vitreous to pull away from the retina creating occasional bright bursts of light or flashes that are seen when the eyes are closed.
These small lights are usually phosphenes, a visual phenomenon caused by mechanical stimuli resulting in pressure or tension on the eye when the eyelids are closed.
Suddenly seeing new floaters and flashes could mean your retina has torn or detached. This is a very serious condition that your ophthalmologist must treat quickly to prevent blindness. There is no treatment for occasional flashes of light caused by vitreous changes from aging.
General Health Issues: Stroke. Bleeding inside the brain can also cause flashes of light. Other stroke symptoms include numbness, weakness, slurred speech, or headache.
Another set of symptoms—unexplained speech, vision or hearing problems—can occur when a tumor grows near the areas of the brain that control these functions. A tumor growing near the visual pathways can cause loss of peripheral vision on one side or cause someone to see flashing lights.

What do the flashing lights look like? A white indistinct flash is more likely related to posterior vitreous detachment, whereas zigzag lines, formed visual hallucinations, or multicoloured flashes are more likely neurological or systemic.
Flashes appear as small sparkles, lightening or fireworks usually in the extreme corners of your vision. They may come and go. Floaters are more visible in bright light, or if you are looking at a plain bright background such as a cloudless sky or white wall.
Anxiety, especially severe or chronic anxiety, can affect the eyes. Some people experience eye pain, blurry vision, double vision, and tunnel vision. Changes to the body during the “fight or flight” system are likely to blame. Distractions, exercise, and control over breathing can give your eyes some relief.
If you suddenly start experiencing vision problems, a drop in blood sugar may be the culprit. According to a past case report, blurred vision is the most common eye-related symptom (affecting 73 percent of study participants), followed by dimness in vision (about 45 percent) and black spots (37 percent).
What is an Eye Stroke? An eye stroke, or anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, is a dangerous and potentially debilitating condition that occurs from a lack of sufficient blood flow to the tissues located in the front part of the optic nerve.
The most common cause of optic nerve degeneration is multiple sclerosis. Flickering lights or flashes in the field of vision, along with pain, loss of color perception, and eventual vision loss are also part of damage to the optic nerve during optic neuritis.
Flashes look like twinkles or lightning streaks. You may have experienced the same sensation if you were ever hit in the eye and “saw stars.” Floaters can get in the way of clear vision, often when reading.
With treatment, eye flashes should go away. It usually takes about a month, but sometimes it can take up to 6 months for them to completely disappear. Diabetic retinopathy is caused when high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the retina (a light-sensitive layer of cells in the back of the eye). Damaged blood vessels can swell and leak, causing blurry vision or stopping blood flow.

Clinically depressed individuals or people going through periods of intense stress are more likely to experience the following vision problems: Blurred vision: Individuals may experience a lack of sharpness in their vision, preventing them from seeing fine details clearly.
