“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you” (James 4:10). The good news is that when you embrace humility, the Lord promises that he will exalt you. What is this? If you want to receive grace in a unique way, seek to consistently humble yourself in the sight of God.
It is required by God. So, we can humble ourselves: we willingly posture ourselves before God without pretention or pride. Or, we can do it the hard way—experience pain in our lives as a result of pride that eventually leads to humiliation. In other words, we can be humble, or be humbled.
In Chasing Humility, he helps you explore eight essential aspects of humility in the life of a Christian: authenticity, confidence, gratitude, love, praise, empowerment, mentoring, and breaking barriers.
Finally, in His hours of greatest suffering, Jesus subjected Himself to the Father. And in perhaps His greatest act of humility, He allowed Himself to be hung upon the cross. His last words in mortality typify His teachings on humility.
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will heal their land."
What Does 'Humble Yourself' Mean? Humility reconciles us to God. Because of humility, we see that we cannot save ourselves in our own strength, perfection, or good works. We need humility to receive God's saving grace and mercy: All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
It means you aim to continually listen, receive, and respond with generous openness to life from the deep conviction of God's lovingkindness and goodwill. Spiritual humility is reliant upon the God who is “other” than us. He is most often known in ways that include and yet transcend our physical senses alone.
Humility is an attitude of spiritual modesty that comes from understanding our place in the larger order of things. It entails not taking our desires, successes, or failings too seriously.
James 4:10 KJV
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
What was Jesus' ultimate example of humility? (He died on a cross. Dying on a cross was the most humiliating and painful way to die. However, Jesus chose to humble Himself even to die on a cross. He knew it was the ONLY way to save us and bring glory to the Father.)
The greatest example of humility in Scripture is the Lord Jesus Christ. We are instructed to follow His example. Like Jesus, we are to “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than [ourselves]” (Phil. 2:3).
“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: 'God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. '” James 4:6.
And Psalm 25:9 is saying that he teaches the humble his way. So the key to righteousness and the key to experiencing the ways of God, the abundant life that God has designed for us, his ways in our lives, is humility. So we pray, Oh, God, we ask for humility in each of our lives. God, we pray for humility.
By having a more down-to-earth view of yourself, you will be able to relate more to others. An arrogant self-centered person may see others as beneath them, not worth the time or effort. A humble person might see those same people not as those beneath them, but as those in need.
It is called humility, and nothing pleases the Lord more than a humble heart. Throughout Scripture we see that God delights in a humble heart. As much as He opposes pride, He rewards humility. And in Psalm 25:9 we see that humility is rewarded with God's guidance and wisdom.
