Cerebral aneurysms can occur anywhere in the brain, but most form in the major arteries along the base of the skull. All cerebral aneurysms have the potential to rupture and cause bleeding within the brain or surrounding area. Most cerebral aneurysms do not show symptoms until they either become very large or rupture.

The most common location of an aneurysm is the aorta, which carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body. The thoracic aorta is the short segment of the aorta in the chest cavity. The abdominal aorta is the section of the aorta that runs through the abdomen.
Aneurysms are classified by their location in the body. The arteries of the brain and heart are the two most common sites of a serious aneurysm. The bulge can take two main shapes: Fusiform aneurysms bulge all sides of a blood vessel.
An unruptured brain aneurysm may not have any symptoms, especially if it's small. However, a larger unruptured aneurysm may press on brain tissues and nerves. Symptoms of an unruptured brain aneurysm may include: Pain above and behind one eye.
An unruptured aneurysm might not initially have any symptoms, but that usually changes as it grows larger. The warning signs that indicate a person has developed an unruptured brain aneurysm include: Pain behind or above an eye. Double vision.
The most common and deadly aneurysm is aortic. Two-thirds of aortic aneurysms are abdominal (AAA), and one-third is thoracic (occurring in the chest cavity). When the aneurysm occurs in both areas, it is called thoracoabdominal.
Cerebral Aneurysm
These are most common in people from ages 30 to 60. While cerebral aneurysms can be tiny and not cause any problems, larger ones can rupture causing bleeding in the brain and potentially becoming fatal.
People who are born with an abnormality in an artery wall and those with certain genetic conditions are also more likely to develop cerebral aneurysms. These conditions include Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, Moyamoya disease, fibromuscular dysplasia, and neurofibromatosis.
About 25% of people who experience a brain aneurysm rupture die within 24 hours. Around 50% of people die within three months of the rupture due to complications. Of those who survive, about 66% experience permanent brain damage. Some people recover with little or no disability.
Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 50% of cases. Of those who survive, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Approximately 15% of people with a ruptured aneurysm die before reaching the hospital. Most of the deaths are due to rapid and massive brain injury from the initial bleeding.
It takes approximately 30 years for an aneurysm to grow 10 mm. There is a local minimum growth rate, and this local minimum growth rate is at 6.5 mm for rm = 4.77 mm, 7.5 mm for rm = 5.77 mm, and 9 mm for rm = 6.77 mm. Also, this local minimum growth rate is between 0.2 – 0.3 mm/yr and increases with rm.
Doctors often describe the head pain caused by a burst aneurysm as a "thunderclap." The pain comes on in an instant, and it's very intense. It will feel like the worst headache of your life. A migraine, on the other hand, tends to come on gradually.
With rapid, expert treatment, patients can often recover fully. An unruptured brain aneurysm may cause zero symptoms. People can live with them for years before detection. If a brain aneurysm is unruptured, no blood has broken through the blood vessel walls.
Symptoms of an unruptured brain aneurysm can include: visual disturbances, such as loss of vision or double vision. pain above or around your eye. numbness or weakness on 1 side of your face.
Causes of aneurysms
high blood pressure (hypertension) over many years resulting in damage and weakening of blood vessels. fatty plaques (atherosclerosis) resulting in a weakness of the blood vessel wall. inherited diseases that may result in weaker than normal blood vessel walls.
This is a blood vessel ballooning with blood because the vein is blocked or obstructed higher up. If this bulge (aneurysm) bursts, blood enters and damages the brain. When this happens, it is referred to as a hemorrhagic stroke. While brain aneurysms are less frequent than ischemic strokes, they are more deadly.
Inherited risks associated with brain aneurysms
A family history of aneurysms can suggest a higher chance of having the condition. But, these risks increase even more if you have two or more first-degree relatives — such as a parent, sibling, or child — who have an aneurysm.
“A brain aneurysm is essentially the neurological equivalent to a sudden heart attack,” said Ricardo Hanel, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon and co-director of the Baptist Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center. “It can happen to anyone, even young and healthy people. Someone can seem perfectly fine up until that singular moment.”
High blood pressure is the leading cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Heavy lifting or straining can cause pressure to rise in the brain and may lead to an aneurysm rupture. Strong emotions, such as being upset or angry, can raise blood pressure and can subsequently cause aneurysms to rupture.
Up to 6% of people living in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. While still rare, they do happen to up to 30,000 Americans each year.
