According to the United Nations, in 2019, the United States, Germany, and Saudi Arabia had the largest number of immigrants of any country, while Tuvalu, Saint Helena, and Tokelau had the lowest.
The United States is home to the highest number of immigrants in the world. An estimated 50.6 million people in the United States—a bit more than 15% of the total population of 331.4 million—were born in a foreign country.
Historically, the United States has been by far the destination for the largest number of resettled refugees (although a few other countries have a higher per capita rate of resettlement). However resettlement declined under Trump and low numbers have so far continued under Biden.
Türkiye hosts the largest number of refugees, with 3.6 million people, followed by the Islamic Republic of Iran with 3.4 million people. Colombia is third with 2.5 million, including other people in need of international protection.
The United States has more international migrants than any other country. With nearly 51 million migrants in 2020, the U.S. leads the world on this measure by a wide margin. Germany has the next-largest such population with about 15.8 million migrants, followed by Saudi Arabia with 13.5 million.
HAVING JUST surpassed China as the world's most populous country, India contains more than 1.4bn people. What's more, its migrants are both more numerous and more successful than their Chinese peers. The Indian diaspora has been the largest in the world since 2010, and is a powerful resource for India's government.
Some people move in search of work or economic opportunities, to join family, or to study. Others move to escape conflict, persecution, terrorism, or human rights violations. Still others move in response to the adverse effects of climate change, natural disasters, or other environmental factors.
Australia has a long history of humanitarian resettlement, providing safety to more than 930,000 people since World War II. Refugees make an important contribution to Australia in many areas including social engagement, workforce participation, business ownership and volunteering within our communities.
There were an estimated five immigrants per every 1,000 EU inhabitants in 2021, with Luxembourg having the highest rate of immigration in 2021 in terms of the size of the resident population, recording almost 40 immigrants per 1,000 people.
Foreigners can get Australian citizenship via a grant. They should have lived legally in Australia for a minimum of four years before applying, and this should be backed by a year of permanent residency. They should have lived in the country for 9 out of 12 months before the application date.
Unless you have significant experience in your occupation, profession or Skilled Trade it is virtually impossible to move to Australia with no qualifications unless you happen to be the partner of an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident and emigrate on an Australian Partner Visa.
Asian diasporas
The largest Asian diaspora, and in the world, is the Indian diaspora. The overseas Indian community, estimated at over 17.5 million, is spread across many regions in the world, on every continent.
Victim diasporas are the result of the expulsion of a group from a region. Imperial or colonial diasporas are the result of political expansion. Trade diasporas are the result of business activities. Labor diasporas are the result of a global pursuit for work.
Based on those broad criteria, New Zealand, Norway and Australia have the most development-friendly migration policies; while the Visegrad four - Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, languish at the bottom of our table of 27 rich countries.
Turkey is again the host of the most refugees worldwide by far, and the number keeps growing. The country hosted nearly 3.8 million refugees – almost all of whom are from Syria – in 2021, after that number was around 3.5 million in the middle of 2020.
With the exception of Bulgaria, all the other Eastern European EU countries had received less than 0.04 per cent. However, these countries received a large number of Ukrainian refugees in 2022. In Western Europe, it is Portugal that has received the fewest refugees, at 0.61 per cent.
