According to research on 46 nations with internet users aged between 16 to 64, Japan had the lowest overall number of social media accounts at 3.8, while India had the highest at 11.5 per user.
Urban internet users in the Philippines spent the most time on social media in 2020, at an average of 4 hours and 5 minutes (4:05) scrolling through socials per day. The US did not crack the top 10 for social media usage time spent, as urban internet users spent a comparatively low 2:08 on social media each day.

With around 625,500 average monthly searches for social media platforms, the study found that Hawaii was the least social media-obsessed state. When measured against the state's population, this results in an average of 440.34 social media-related searches for every 1,000 people.
As of January 2023, 53.9 percent of social media users in the United States were women, and 46.1 percent of users were men. In 2022, there were over 302 million social media users in the country.
TikTok Users by Gender
As of the latest data (January 2022), the majority of TikTok users are female (57%). And 43% are male. In a similar vein, the majority of TikTok creators are also female (53.79%).
Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat ranked lower on the toxicity scale, and YouTube had the lowest toxicity rating of the bunch, averaging 5.38.

Digital is on the up
According to the study, 25.31 million Australians, or 96% of the population are internet users, while the number of active social media users is 21.30 million, or 81% of the population.
The number of social media users worldwide will increase by 2.4% this year, according to our forecast. That's a major slowdown from 2020, when the number of users increased by 10.8% during the pandemic. A higher percentage of internet users are using social media, too.
Reduced exposure to fake and bad news
It can have a massive impact on anxiety and can result in generalised anxiety disorders. Without social media we would reduce our exposure to the amount of bad and fake news, and therefore reduced our overall levels of anxiety, depression, and fear.
People living in Nigeria and The Philippines spend the most time on social media. Each spends more than four hours a day on social media, or 70% more than the global average. At the other end of the spectrum, residents of Japan spend just 51 minutes per day on social media.
South Africans are the most internet-addicted, with an average of 578 minutes (9 hours and 38 minutes) spent online each day, three hours more than the global average.

Worldwide, 51.6% of Instagram's Users are Male
If you look at Instagram's worldwide audience, you'll also find that a majority of its users are male. 51.6% of users are male, while 48.4% are female. If you look at just the United States, 56% of Instagram's users are female, and only 44% are male.
India has the most YouTube users, estimated at 225 million. The United States follows, with 197 million.
